Personality Theories
Personality theories study how an individual develops their personality and can be utilized
in studying personality disorders. These theories address whether personality is a biological trait or
one that is developed through a person's interaction with their environment.
The four personality theories are:

• Psychoanalytic
• Humanistic
• Trait perspective
• Behaviorist theory
Psychoanalytical theory:

Sigmund Freud is the outcome of three interrelated and interacting forces namely id, ego
and superego.
Id- (The pleasure seeking element)consists of everything that is inherited psychologically
and is present at the time of birth. It is the foundation of unconscious mind and is the
source of libido drives is largely childish ,irrational, never satisfied and always demanding.

Ego –(The compromising element) is logical ,rational and realistic side of personality .It
keeps the id in check and takes decisions rationally after evaluating the facts in realistic and
objective manner.

Super Ego(The noble and the idealistic element) Is the moral side of personality .It
represents the noblest thoughts ,ideals ,feelings that are acquired by a person from his
parents, teachers ,friends ,religion, organisation, and colleagues .Labelled as ideal ego.
By nature three ego states id, Ego and super ego will always be in a state of constant friction
and tension.
Conflicts between the three ego states will force people to develop defence mechanisms
such as aggression, regression and rationalization.
Big 5 Personality traits
1. Openness: Open-minded, imaginative, creative and insightful .
2.Conscientious:conscientious people are well organised, demonstrate
self-control and can plan their time very well, great team players and
diligent workers.
3.Extraversion:Talkativeness, assertiveness and high amounts of
emotional expressiveness
4.Agreeableness:friendliness, kindness and even politeness a person
displays, agreeableness .
5. Neurocritism: sadness, moodiness, and emotional instability.

Openness: Hitler scored really high in Openness.
Conscientiousness — work ethic, duty, efficiency, discipline and
orderliness he might of scored off the charts.
Extraversion: He was extraordinarily gregarious and influential.
Agreeableness: He would have been extremely low in agreeableness.
Neuroticism : Hitler would have been extremely high in neuroticism
