Joint injuries that force the ends of your bones out of position

ELBOW HIP SHOULDER


 Leave the joint alone. Attempting to
move or jam a dislocated bone back can
damage blood vessels, muscles,
ligaments, and nerves.
 Put an ice pack covered in a cloth on the
area around the joint.
 Use ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain
 IS A BREAK USUALLY IN A BONE.

OPEN OR COMPOUND FRACTURE


 IF THE BROKEN BONE PUNCTURES THE
SKIN.
 GREENSTICK
 TRANSVERSE
 SPIRAL
 OBLIQUE
 COMPRESSION
 COMMINUTED
 SEGMENTAL
 Deformity
 Pain and tenderness upon palpation or
movement
 Grating sound or feeling of broken bones
 Swelling
 Bruising or discoloration
 Exposed bone ends
 Reduced motor ability
 Numbness and paralysis
The bone is not completely separated
The break is in a straight line across the bone
The break spirals around the bone, twisting injury
Diagonal break
The bone is crushed or flat in appearance
The breaks in three or more pieces and fragments are
present at the fracture site.
Same bone is fractured in two places, there is a floating segment bone
 Applying a device to stabilize any
painful, swollen or deformed body
part.
 The primary objective is to prevent
further movement of the body parts.
 Other reasons for splinting
 Reduce pain and suffering
 Minimize damge to soft tissues
 Prevent closed fracture from being an
open fracture
 Minimize blood loss or shock
IS A SUPPORTIVE DEVICE USED TO KEEP IN
PLACE ANY SUSPECTED FRACTURE IN ONE’S
ARM OR LEG.
 Always communicate your plans with your patient if
possible
 Before immobilizing, expose and control bleeding
 Always cut away clothing around the injury site before
immobilizing
 Remove jewelries
 Assess pulse, motor function and sensation
 If there is pain or grating sound/feeling worsens
discontinue aligning/moving
 Always follow local protocols
 Do not attempt to push protruding bones
 Place pads between the spaces of body and splint
 DO NOT OVER-SPLINT the victim
