Owen Proposal Final
In the context of postal and courier services, the increasing demand for
secure and efficient package delivery solutions presents a significant
challenge. Traditional delivery methods often face issues such as
package theft, misdelivery and the inconvenience of coordinating
delivery times with recipients. These challenges lead to customer
dissatisfaction and operational inefficiencies for postal services.
The proposed IoT enabled Smart Locker System aims to address these
issues by providing a secure, automated solution for package storage
and retrieval. This system will incorporate advanced security features
such as multi-factor authentication methods like phone number
verification and One Time Passwords (OTPs). By utilizing sensors and
programmed hardware, the smart lockers will ensure that only authorized
users can access their packages, thereby reducing the risk of theft and
unauthorized access.

Objectives
To create an electronic locking circuit of a smart locker using password mechanism
To establish communication between the locker and customer cell phone using GSM
module
To design a user friendly interface that allows customers to easily access their packages
through a mobile application
To enable postal and courier services to manage locker allocations dynamically based
on demand ensuring improved service delivery
Design
I will use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create precise and scalable models that detail
all mechanical components and assembly:

Purpose: Package storage
Material: Stainless steel/galvanized steel, at least 2mm thick
Screen: Industry grade touch screen (eg. 200mm x 200mm)
Speaker: A speaker, for notifications and alarms
Software/API: Allow to run a second party web application/browser on screen and communicate with
firmware. Must be containerised e.g. Docker etc.
Lock: Electronic lock, remains locked by default (when no power supply), automatically closable
Weight: For the purposes of mobility, each module should not exceed 120kg +/- 10kg
Dimensions: Locker: 0.8m x 0.8 m x 2.1m +/- 0.1m
Sensors: temperature and humidity sensors in each box (mandatory), and any others.
Barcode and QR Code Scanner/Camera: 2D and 3D
Temperature: -10 to 50 °C
Power supply: 220-230V (16A) earthed, Back Up to 4 Hours,
Tamperproof: power disruption, force on locks, withstand external vandalism
Communication Protocols: GSM, Wi-Fi/Ethernet, RFID, MQTT etc. (you may focus on at least two for
demonstration purposes)
Cont…
Accessibility: Must be easily accessible to potential clients
User manual: Detailed user manuals for both owners and their clients (digital and print
ready).
API: Designers should ensure that the API is modular, secure and easily integrated into
the manufacturing systems. The API should be able to offer a wide range of operations
of the Smart Locker including door lock operations, status check, and user identification.
Key considerations include security, interoperability, scalability, user management,
error handling, and documentation.
