Defining thematic planning
Different conceptions
• Unit planning
• Interdisciplinary teaching
• Integration of subjects. But which subjects? Who decides?
Step 1 – Determining the topic
• In line with the curriculum
• In interdisciplinary teaching, topic is broad because you are planning
for a series of lessons.
• Take for example, the topic of photosynthesis and respiration – These
two can be taught together for conceptual development and linkage.
Step 2 – Constructing learning objectives
A learning objective should describe what students should know or be
able to do at the end of the lessons that they couldn't do before.
Construction of objectives should be in line with Bloom’s taxonomy.
Learning objectives - Knowledge
This is about both the procedural and conceptual knowledge.
Learning objectives - Skills
Refers to both cognitive and practical skills
Learning objectives – Attitudes and values
• Values are qualities that students should develop as principles
underpinning behaviour and decision-making.
• Attitudes support cognitive functioning.
Broad attitudes and values
1. National identity/citizenship
2. Respect for others
3. Perseverance
4. Responsibility
5. Committment
Our example: Photosynthesis
At the end of these lessons learners should be able to…
• List and explain the requirements and products of photosynthesis.
• Describe the process of photosynthesis
• Discuss and account for the significance of photosynthesis. How is
this different from describing?
• Develop an appreciation for the interconnectedness of living
organisms and the importance of these processes for sustaining life.
• Predict and investigate the influence of light on the rate of
photosynthesis.
Step 3 – Crafting the content of the lesson/s
Key ideas of the topic Other disciplines and topics Key concepts

Resources: Indicate the resources that you will need for this specific lesson and how they will be used.
