INTRODUCTION
 PSYCHIATRY:
It is the branch of medical science that deals
with the abnormal state of mental processes
and behaviors and their treatment .

 PSYCHOLOGY :
It is the scientific study of behavior and
metal processes.
 Mental processes include thoughts,
emotions, motivation , memories, dreams,
perceptions, learning and beliefs.
 BEHAVIOR
Is any activity performed by the living
organism that can be observed, recorded
and measured.

 Behavior may be normal and abnormal


 NORMAL BEHAVIOR
Behavior performed according to social
norms that are not harmful to the individual
and to the society .
 ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR
Behavior not maintaining social norms and
causing harm to the individual and to the
society .
 MENTAL DISORDER
A mental disorder is a syndrome
characterized by clinically significant
disturbance in an individual’s cognition,
emotion regulation or behavior that
reflects a dysfunction in the psychological,
biological or developmental processes
underlying mental functioning.
Basic Classification of mental disorders

1) MAJOR MENTAL DISORDERS.

2) MINOR MENTAL DISORDERS.


1)MAJOR MENTAL DISORDERS/ PSYCHOSES

 Is a severe abnormal state of mind where


there is usually disturbance of thinking,
feeling , mood and behavior.
Major mental disorders are two types

A) Organic psychoses

B) Functional psychoses
A) Organic psychoses

Organic psychoses :

There are demonstrable abnormalities in the

brain, biochemical systems or in the other

organic system.
Organic psychoses

Are classified into two groups

• a) DELIRIUM
• b) DEMENTIA
B) Functional psychoses
 These are psychoses where there are
usually no demonstrable abnormalities in
the brain or in the other organs of the body.

These include Schizophrenia, Mania and


Depression.
2) MINOR MENTAL DISORDERS
• In these disorders, there is usually disturbance
of emotions but has a normal perception of
reality.
Common types of neuroses are

Anxiety Somatoform
disorders disorders

Sexual
Eating disorders
disorders
Difference between Psychoses and
Neuroses
PSYCOSIS NEUROSIS
1) Delusion, Hallucination 1) Usually absent
