INVERSE
FUNCTIONS
INVERSE FUNCTIONS
Let f be a one-to-one function with
domain A and range B. Then the
inverse of f,
denoted , is a function with domain B
and range A defined by (y) = x if
and only
f(x) = y for any y in B.
Properties of an Inverse
Function
If the f−1 is a one-to-one function, f
is also one-to-one:
1) f−1 is a one-to-one function; f is
also one-to-one
2) Domain of f−1 = Range of f
3) Range of f−1 = Domain of f
(Oronce 2016, 43)
Properties of an Inverse
Function
NOTE:
A relation reversing the process
performed by any function f(x) is
called inverse of f(x) (Oronce 2016,
42).
EXAMPL
Find E 1inverse of the function
the
f = {(1, −3), (−1, −7), (2, −1), (−2,9)}
Solution:
We interchange the coordinates of each ordered
pair to obtain f−1.
f−1 = {(−3,1)}, (−7, −1), (−1,2), (9, −2) Thus,
the inverse of the function f = {(1, −3), (−1,
−7), (2, −1), (−2,9)} is f−1 = {(−3,1)}, (−7,
EXAMPL Find f−1(x) of the function f(x)
= 7x − 3
E2
SOLUTIO
N:
f(x) = 7x −
3  Replace f(x) with y
y = 7x − 3  Interchange x and y
x = 7y − 3  Solve for the new y
7y = x + 3
y =x+3 / 7  Replace the new y with
f−1(x) f−1(x)
Hence,
=x+3 / 7f−1(x) = x+3 / 7 is the inverse of f(x)
