What is MATATAG

Curriculum?
Group 1
Over the past decade, the Philippine education
system has struggled in global assessments,
ranking last in reading, math, and science in 2018
and showing poor performance in other
international evaluations. By 2022, 91% of Filipino
10-year-olds had trouble with basic reading. These
issues indicate a failing education system, even at
top universities. To tackle these problems, the new
MATATAG curriculum has been introduced to
improve educational outcomes in the country.
Drawbacks of the Old Curriculum
in Education System

Common problems in the education system include overcrowded classrooms

and a shortage of textbooks.

Teachers often face distractions from non-teaching tasks like collecting

health data, and some may neglect their teaching responsibilities.

Additionally, poverty affects student performance, with poor nutrition

impacting attendance.

The government is working to address these issues through various

schemes to improve educational access and quality.
Resolution through the

MATATAG is an update to the Philippine education

system that aims to improve things. It begins with
kindergarten through 10th grade, really focusing on
reading, math, and life skills. It emphasizes core
abilities students need, like reading well, doing
numbers, and learning stuff for jobs and daily life. The
new curriculum marks the first move toward fixing
problems in Philippine schools.
Subject counts per class will decrease to reduce
academic pressure. Students can then mainly focus on
reading and math. DepEd says trimming subjects and
competencies, especially in elementary grades, will also
lighten teachers' workloads. It spans four years, starting
in 2024 and ending in 2027.

Today's students face difficulties in comprehending what

they read, lagging behind their peers in other nations.
The revised education plan addresses this issue,
focusing on strengthening crucial abilities to match
international standards.
Prior to the phased implementation of
the MATATAG Curriculum starting SY
2024-2025, the Department of Education
(DepEd) is conducting the pilot
implementation in reference to DM 54, s.
2023 or the Pilot Implementation of the
MATATAG Curriculum.
Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte said
Matatag has a slogan – “bansang makabata, batang
makabansa, meaning DepEd’s programs and reforms are
intentionally tailored to produce competent, job-ready,
active, responsible and patriotic citizens.”
How School Leaders Can
Champion the New DepEd
Curriculum?
Leaders must shift paradigms and thoroughly
understand the four pillars of MATATAG:

Make Relevant,
Accelerate Services,
Take Care of Learners,
and Give Support to Teachers.

These four principles should be conveyed to every staff

member by the leaders. If the leaders demonstrate a
passion for learning, then the entire school community
will improve from their efforts.
To create a learning environment that integrates
MATATAG principles, schools can use
interdisciplinary projects, community service, and
character-building activities. Teachers should
receive professional development and resources to
adapt to the new curriculum. Effective knowledge
sharing is crucial, supported by well-equipped
educators. Leaders should engage parents and
local businesses to build a supportive learning
ecosystem beyond the classroom.
MATATAG requires ongoing adaptation and
refinement based on feedback. Leaders
should be open to experimenting and
learning. Celebrating achievements, big and
small, helps maintain momentum and
motivation. Sharing success stories can
inspire and highlight the positive impacts of
MATATAG
