What Is It?
The correlation of the variables can be
described in terms of:
1. Form (shape)
2. Trend (direction)
3. Variation (strength)
FORM
TREND
The trend of correlation can be
positive, negative, or
zero/negligible depending on the
direction of the points. The trend
of correlation is summarized in the
table that follows.
Trend Graph Direction Description
of the
Points
The points A positive correlation
follow a exists when high
Positive trend rising values of one
Correlation from left to variable correspond
right. to high values of
another variable or
low values of one
variable correspond
to low values of
another variable.
Trend Graph Direction Description
of the
Points
The points A negative
follow a correlation exists
Negative trend rising when high values of
Correlation from right to one variable
left. correspond to low
values of another
variable or low
values of one
variable correspond
to high values of
another variable.
Trend Graph Direction Description
of the
Points
The points A negligible
follow are correlation exists
No neither when high values of
Correlation rising from one variable
/Negligible left to right correspond to either
Correlation nor right to high or low values of
left. another variable.
VARIATION
The closeness of the points around the
trend line determines the variation or
strength of the correlation between the
variables involved. The closer the points
to the trend line, the stronger the
correlation of the variables is. The
strength of correlation between two
variables can be perfect, strong, weak,
or no/negligible correlation.
Variation Graph Description

This correlation exists

Strong when almost all of the
Positive points are on the line or
Correlation the points are closely
scattered on the trend
line that rises from left
to right.
Variation Graph Description

Compared to strong
Weak positive correlation, the
Positive points in this correlation
Correlation are scattered a bit far
from the trend line that
rises from left to right.
Variation Graph Description

The points in this

No correlation do not follow
Correlation any trend line. The points
or Negligible are just scattered
Correlation around the Cartesian
plane.
Variation Graph Description

The points in this

Weak correlation are scattered
Negative a bit far from the trend
Correlation line from right to left.
Variation Graph Description

This correlation exists

Moderate when the points are
Negative moderately scattered
Correlation rising from right to left.
Variation Graph Description

This correlation exists

Strong when almost all of the
Negative points are on the line or
Correlation the points are closely
scattered on the trend
line that rises from right
to left.
Variation Graph Description

Perfect Two variables can also

Positive have perfect positive or
Correlation perfect negative
correlation. In a scatter
plot, the variables with
perfect correlation will
Perfect show points that fall
Negative into a straight line.
