Measures of Central Tendency

• Measures of central tendency

are statistical measures which
describe the position of a
distribution.
• In the univariate context, the
mean, median and mode are
the most commonly used
measures of central tendency.
• computable values on a
distribution that discuss the
Measures of Central Tendency
• It describes the measure of central location.
• Mean – also known as the average. It is the sum of the data which is divided by the number
of the data.
Formula: or

Example: Following are the time in minutes spent in the cafeteria queue 12, 24, 16, 16, 18,
21, 20, 23, 16, 19. Find the average time.
n = 10 (just count the number of data)
Solution:

(if the answer is in many decimal point, round off the answer to the nearest two decimal
point)
Measures of Central Tendency
•Median – the middle most score.
Rule: Arrange first the data into ascending order before locating the
middle most score or the median
Note: if the value of “n” is odd number, then just get the middle most
score
If the value of “n” is even number, then get the two middle most scores,
add them and divide the sum by two.
Example:
12, 24, 16, 16, 18, 21, 23, 16, 19 n = 9
Arrange first the data from lowest to highest scores
12 16 16 16 18 19 21 23 24

Since the value of “n” is an odd number, then we just get the middle
score.
Measures of Central Tendency
12, 24, 16, 16, 18, 21, 23, 16, 19, 20 n = 10
Since the value of “n” is an even number, then:

• 16 16 16 18 19 20 21 23 24

Note: You don’t have to round off the answer into whole number.
Measures of Central Tendency
• Mode ( – most frequent occurring score/s
a. No mode – there are no frequent scores
b. Unimodal – only one mode
c. Bimodal – 2 modes
d. Trimodal – 3 modes
e. Multimodal – 4 or more modes
Example:
12 16 16 16 18 19 20 21 23 24
Since the most frequent occurring score is 16, then:
unimodal
• Example:
12 16 16 18 18 19 19 21 23 24
trimodal
Measures of Central Tendency
1.It describe the middle or center
of a data set and include the
mean, median, and mode.
2.What are the symbol of mean,
median, mode.(3 points)
3. The arithmetic average of all
values in the dataset. It is
calculated by summing all values
and dividing by the number of
values.
PROBLEM SOLVING(MEAN)
1: Problem: You have three
friends. Their ages are 20, 22,
and 24. What is their average
age?

2: Problem: You scored 85, 90,

and 75 on your last three tests.
What is your average score?

PROBLEM SOLVING(MEDIAN)
1: Problem: A student's test scores
are: 85, 70, 92, 88, and 75. What is
the median score? Solution: 1.
Order the scores: 70, 75, 85, 88, 92
2. Identify the middle score: The
middle score is 85.

2: Problem: The heights of five

trees in a park are: 12 meters, 15

PROBLEM SOLVING(MODE)
1: Problem: A survey asked people
their favorite fruit. The results
were: Apple, Banana, Orange,
Banana, Strawberry, Apple,
Banana. What is the most popular
fruit (mode)?
