Book of Knowledge

Quality management is a discipline for

ensuring that outputs, benefits, and the
processes by which they are delivered,
meet stakeholder requirements and are
fit for purpose.
Quality Concepts
• QUALITY ASSURANCE:
o Focuses on planning, techniques, and processes.
o It is proactive and preventative in nature.

The primary purpose is to confirm satisfactory operation

of the system as a whole, not to find defects.

• QUALITY CONTROL
o A process to ensure product quality is maintained or
improved.
o Quality control involves testing of units and
determining if they are within the specifications for
the final product.

Control entails conducting and directing supervision of

tasks, i.e. inspection, to ensure requirements of the
product are achieved.

What does this mean in Project Management?

• QUALITY ASSURANCE:
• Provides confidence that projects, programmes
and portfolios are being well managed.
• Validates the consistent use of procedures and
standards,
• Ensures that staff have the correct knowledge,
skills and attitudes to fulfil their project roles and
responsibilities in a competent manner.

• QUALITY CONTROL

Identifying quality requirements and standards for the project
• Requirements are determined with the stakeholders.
• These requirements become the foundation for the project.

• The way the team will implement the

quality policy
• The way the quality of the project will be
assured during the project
• The resources required to ensure quality
• The additional activities necessary to
implement the quality plan

PROJECT
What Quality Management Processes or
QUALITY
Standards will be used?
MANAGEMENT
ISO9001:2015
The international standard that specifies requirements for a quality
management system (QMS). Organizations use the standard to
demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services
that meet customer and regulatory requirements.

ISO9001:2015

‘ISO 9001:2015 sets out the criteria for a quality management system
and is the only standard in the family that can be certified to. It can be
used by any organization, large or small, regardless of its field of
activity. This standard is based on a number of quality management
principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and
implication of top management, the process approach and continual
improvement’
