Who are all these people??

What do they all have in common?

Speech writing
In this lesson we will:
Develop our speech writing techniques

Objectives:
• Analyse what makes a good speech
• Revise DAFOREST techniques
• Practise writing a speech
Recap….
• What did we cover last week?
What do you think about this speech??
What makes a good speech?
Have you watched any
speeches online that
inspired you? Who was it?
Why was it inspiring?

In pairs come up with at

least 3 qualities of what you
think makes a good speech.
Why speeches?
- In Paper 2, Question 5, you will most likely to be asked to write a
speech, a letter, or an article.
- This is worth 40 points (25% of your whole grade).
- As part of the mark scheme you need to demonstrate your
understanding of the different genres (speech, letter or article).

So how do we show a speech is a speech??

Speeches are all about persuading the
audience.
- They should include a variety of the DAFOREST
techniques.
- Without looking, write down these techniques!

different that world leaders need to take
more action to address climate
speeches on change.
climate • However, they both do it in very
change. different ways.
• First of all you need to pick out all
the DAFOREST techniques used.
• Then you are going to think about
which one you think is more
effective and why.

- In your books write down:

Which one you prefer - at least 2 sentences

explaining why, with examples.
How to write a speech…
• We’ve been looking at what techniques can be used in
speeches and what they sound like.
• As part of the exam, you may need to write a speech.
• Let’s have a look at what a speech looks like in its written
form.
What does a good education mean to you?
• We are going to read a speech written by a student.
• I want you to find examples of all the DAFOREST
techniques which they have used (annotate your
text).
• What have they done well? What could they
improve on?
• Then you are going to give it a mark for content and
organisation (24 of the 40 marks)
Level 2 - some successful communication (7-
12/24)
Level 3 - consistent, clear communication (13-
18/24)
Level 4 - compelling, convincing communication
(19-24/24)
Now let’s put it into practise!

• Identify the Genre, Audience and Purpose (GAP) of the piece

of writing before doing anything else.
• Using GAP will alter the style of your writing.
“With the rise in selfies and Instagram photo filtering apps,
people in our society are becoming completely self obsessed.”

Write the text for a speech to be given at a meeting for new college
students in which you will persuade them of your opinion.
Firstly, let’s write some model sentences
together…
• ‘I am speaking to you today…’
• ‘Now more than ever…’
• ‘For too long…:……’
• ‘I understand…; however…’
• ‘In conclusion…’

What about including a rhetorical question and a

short dramatic statement?
Turn to the person next to you...
• How much social media do you use? A lot, or not
very much?

• What kinds of social media do you use the most?

• (Write these down) What are some pros and cons

of social media?
Now complete your plan
Brainstorm some ideas. What is your opinion?
What is your main point?
INTRODUCTION Pack a punch. Ask some questions. Leave them
wanting to know more.
BECAUSE 1) Explain and develop. 2-3 separate paragraphs
2)
3)
BUT…. You can refer to the other argument. But don’t forget
to destroy it!
SO….. Conclude your argument. End it with a powerful
point.
You now have X minutes to write
your answer.

This will be silent, focused writing.

people in our society are becoming completely self obsessed.”

students in which you will persuade them of your opinion.
Peer review
Write one paragraph for your classmate providing some
feedback:
• Was their main message clear?
• Was it clearly a speech? Why?
• Did they give an engaging introduction?
• Did they use enough DAFOREST techniques? Which did they
use well?
• What could they do to improve?
Plenary
• What do you think is the single most
important thing to include in a speech?
