TYPES OF ETHICS

SELVABARATHY.S
TYPES OF
ETHICS
Normative Ethics
Meta-Ethics
Applied Ethics.
NORMATIVE ETHICS:
 Normative ethics is the study of
ethical actions and attempts to
establish norms or standards of
right and wrong. It provides
guidelines or principles on how
individuals ought to act in specific
situations and in life in general.
Normative ethics deals with the
question, “What should we do?”
o Consequentialism: This approach holds that the morality of an
action is determined by its consequences. The most well-known
form is utilitarianism, which argues that an action is right if it
maximizes overall happiness or well-being.

o Deontology: Associated with philosophers like Immanuel Kant,

deontological ethics focuses on rules and duties. An action is
considered right if it follows a moral rule or duty, regardless of the
consequences.

o Virtue Ethics: Originating from Aristotle, virtue ethics emphasizes

the importance of moral character. Rather than focusing on actions,
it asks what kind of person one should be, promoting virtues such
as honesty, courage, and compassion
META-ETHICS
Meta-ethics explores the nature, origin, and
meaning of ethical concepts and judgments.
Instead of focusing on what is right or
wrong, meta-ethics addresses questions
like: “What does ‘good’ mean?”, “Are moral
values objective or subjective?”, and “Can
moral judgments be true or false?”
o Moral Realism vs. Moral Anti-Realism:

o Moral Realism argues that there are objective moral facts that are
true regardless of human beliefs or feelings.

o Moral Anti-Realism denies the existence of objective moral facts and

holds that morality is subjective, often determined by cultural,
emotional, or personal factors.

o Emotivism: The view that moral judgments are expressions of

emotional reactions rather than statements of fact.

o Moral Relativism: The belief that moral truths are not absolute and
can vary between cultures or individuals.
APPLIED ETHICS
Applied ethics is the practical
application of moral principles and
ethical theories to specific real-world
issues. It deals with controversial and
concrete ethical dilemmas, such as
medical ethics, business ethics,
environmental ethics, and social
justice.
o Bioethics: Addresses ethical issues in biology and medicine, such
as cloning, euthanasia, genetic engineering, and stem cell
research.

o Business Ethics: Deals with ethical dilemmas in the corporate

world, including issues like corporate responsibility, labor
practices, and consumer rights.

o Environmental Ethics: Explores moral responsibilities toward the

environment, including sustainability, animal rights, and climate
change.

o Social Ethics: Looks at ethical questions surrounding social issues

like poverty, discrimination, justice, and human rights.
