Physiology
• Target: Physiotherapy, 3rd year
• Facilitator: Mwangi M.

10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 1

Introduction to Exercise Physiology

10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 2

Lecture Outline
• Introduction to exercise physiology and
skeletal; muscle physiology

10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 3

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lecture the student will be
able to:
• Define of exercise physiology, exercise,
physical activity
• Discuss the importance of exercise
physiology

10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 4

Introduction
• In ancient world, every individual had hard work
associated with his profession
• Which is lacking in modern world and hence
inculcating a definite time and regular exercise to be
a part of our life style is a must

10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 5

Def
• Physical Activity – Body movement produced by
mms action that increases energy expenditure e.g.?
• Exercise is the planned structured, repeated rhythmic
purposeful movements or physical activity given to
body parts to keep it healthy and develop the body
parts

10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 6

Exercise Physiology – Definition
• Exercise Physiology is the study of the effects
of exercise on the body.
• As an academic discipline:
– Body of knowledge built on facts and theories
derived from research

10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 7

Exercise Physiology
• Specifically, Exercise Physiology is concerned
with the body’s responses & adaptations to the
stress of exercise, ranging from the system level
(e.g., cardiovascular system) to the subcellular
level (e.g., production of ATP for energy).
• These modifications can be short term – that is
lasting only for the duration of the
activity/exercise – or long term – present as long
as the activity is continued on a regular basis.
10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 8
Exercise Physiology
• Exercise physiologists are interested in both the acute
(immediate) & chronic (long-term) effects & adaptations
of exercise on all aspects of body functioning.
• Acute adaptations – the changes in human physiology
that occur during exercise.
• Chronic adaptations – the alterations in the structure &
functions of the body that occur in response to the
regular completion of exercise or physical activity.
• Exercise training – the repeated use of exercise to
improve physical fitness

Physiological Responses to Exercise

10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 10

What does training do?
• Permits adaptations within the physiological systems
to minimise the disturbance to homeostasis resulting
from exercise
• This means exercise intensity can be increased for a
given distance or duration or a given intensity can be
sustained longer

10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 11

Physiological Interactions with Training

• Oxygen delivery
• Heat dissipation
• Motor control
• Substrate delivery
• Endurance
• Power output
• Hormonal responses
– Can you get these with a pill?

10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 12

Why is exercise Physiology relevant in
understanding performance capabilities?

• Physiological determinants of performance

– Rate at which energy can be transformed
– Quantity of energy which can be available
– Energy cost of performing a given task
• Some athletic events are more relevant
– Individual rather than team
• Running, cycling, swimming, rowing, x-country ski
• But the principles apply to all…..
– Shouldn’t all exercise science/HPE/PT majors be
required to take an exercise physiology course?
10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 13
Exercise Physiology – Importance
• Design effective fitness programs for people of all
ages
• Guide the development & implementations of cardiac
/resp rehabilitation programs
• Plan programs to help children & youths to
incorporate physical activity into their life, and to
structure rehabilitation programs for patients and
injured athletes

10/21/2024 Introduction to Exercise Physiology 14

Clinical Exercise Physiology
• A sub-component of exercise physiology that
involves the application of exercise physiology
principles, knowledge and skills for purposes of the
prevention, rehabilitation or diagnosis of disease or
disability in humans.
