TIME RATES
Example 1

Suppose that x and y

are both differentiable
functions of t and are
related by the equation
Find dy/dt when x = 3,
given that dx/dt = 8 when
Example 2
The top of a ladder 10 meters
long rests on a vertical wall of a
residential building while the
bottom rests on a horizontal
ground. If the top slides down at
the rate of 20 meters per minute,
how fast is the lower end moves
along the ground when the lower
end is 8 meters from the wall ?
A girl is using a straw to
drink Sprite from a right
cylindrical glass at the
rate of 6 cubic
centimeters per second.
Example 3 If the height of the glass
is 12 centimeters and
the diameter is 6
centimeters, how fast is
the level of Sprite falling
at a constant rate ?
Example 4
 An oil spilled from a
ruptured tanker spreads
in a circular ripple whose
radius increases at a
constant rate of 2 meters
per minute. How fast is
the area of the spill
increasing wnen the
radius of the spill is 20
meters.
Example 5
A man is flying a kite. He holds the
string 1.5 meters above level ground ,
and the string is paid out at the rate of
2 meters per second as the kite moves
horizontally at an altitude of 51.5
meters. Assuming there is no sag in
the string , find the rate at which the
kite is moving horizontally when there
are 80 meters of cord out ?
Exercise 1
A pole 12 meters long is leaning
against a vertical wall of a building.
If the foot of the pole is being pulled
away from the wall at the rate of 2
meters per minute, how fast is the
top of the pole sliding down the wall
at the instant when the foot of the
pole is 5 meters from the wall ?
Exercise 2
Aman on a wharf 12 meters
above the level of water is
pulling a rope tied to a boat at
the rate of 2 meters per
minute . How fast is the boat
approaching the wharf when
there are 20 meters of rope ?
Exercise 3
The radius of sphere is
increasing at the rate of
2 meters per second.
Find the rate of change
of the volume with
respect to time t when
r = 4 meters.
