Procedure for Setting 2CV/2CC

Impeller Pressure Tip Clearance.

The following is a step-by-step procedure to adjust the impeller pressure tip

clearance for a 2CV/2CC compressor. This procedure assumes the rotor assembly
is installed in the compressor with a dummy thrust collar and the diffuser is installed
into position. A dummy thrust collar is used, as it will be necessary to remove the
thrust bearing and install a machined thrust bearing shim to maintain the adjusted
impeller pressure tip clearance.

It is assumed the person performing this procedure has been trained in the method
of adjusting an impeller-to-diffuser pressure tip clearance. It is also assumed the
person is familiar with general machining practices and the use of micrometers.
•Using a good quality dial indicator, check the rotor assembly total axial travel. The
total axial travel is the distance from the impeller contact with the diffuser to the
impeller contact with the impeller counter bore in the line bore.

•Move the dial indicator out of the way and install a clearance setting tool.
•Install the dial indicator into position, either on the flat surface of the dummy thrust
collar or the end of the clearance setting tool positioned against the thrust collar or
thrust collar bolt.

•Using 3 ea. adjusting screws in the threaded holes of the thrust bearing flange, move
the bearing outward from the gear cover.

•Adjust the thrust bearing until the desired value for the impeller pressure tip is
achieved on the dial indicator.

•Using a depth micrometer, check the distance from the top of the bearing flange to
the flange seating surface in the gear cover through each open hole of the thrust
bearing flange. Record the average value for future reference.

•Remove the dummy thrust collar and thrust bearing.

•With the thrust bearing removed, check the flange thickness in 2-3 different areas.
Record the average value for future reference.
•With the thrust bearing removed, check the flange thickness in 2-3 different areas. Record the
average value for future reference.

•Subtract the value in step 8 from the value in step 6. This new value will be the thickness
required for the thrust bearing shim. Record this value for future reference.

•Machine a blank shim, part #68066711 (typically supplied in a gasket kit), to the value
determined in step 9.

•Install the machined shim, thrust bearing and dummy thrust collar into position.

•Check the remaining axial travel. This remaining axial travel value added to the pressure tip
clearance, obtained in step 5, should equal the total axial travel, obtained in step 1. If
necessary, repeat steps 1 through 11 to insure the proper pressure tip clearance is achieved.

•Once satisfied with the values of step 1, 5 and 12, the dummy thrust collar must be removed
and the balanced thrust collar for the rotor assembly installed into position.

•With the thrust collar bolt tightened to align the match marks and the thrust bearing tightened in
position, the inactive travel should be checked. The inactive axial travel is a fixed, calculated
value within the thrust bearing insert and is not adjustable. However, this should be checked to
insure adequate clearance between the back of the impeller and the bottom of the impeller
counter bore.

•Install the thrust bearing cover into position and tighten the cover bolts.
