Asthma
• Chronic inflammation disorder of the airway
• Inflammation is the primary problem
• Reoccurring episodes of wheezing, breathlessness,
tight chest, and coughing
• Human cells have high amounts of omega-6 FA
that increase inflammation, so asthma patients
need diet low in Omega 6 FA and high in Omega 3

• Mediterranean diet is typically recommended
along with drug-nutrient interactions, and weight
loss

Dysautonomia
• a disorder of the ANS (controls breathing),
sympathetic, general failure that causes a fall in
blood pressure while standing, hypertension, rapid
pulse rate
• Treat underlying causes such as asthma that
disrupts ANS
• Not much research on dietary habits; small
frequent meals, avoid alcohol & caffeine, gluten-
free diet, keep diet diary to track triggers

reduce symptoms, fresh fruits and veggies, whole
grains, healthy fat seafood, olive oil, nuts, and
legumes
• Less poultry, eggs, cheese, and dairy as they
contain high omega 6's which overproduce
PES Statement
Food and nutrition related knowledge deficit (NB-
1.1) related to lack of or limited prior nutrition-
related education (EY-1.3) as evidenced by a 24-
hour dietary recall, symptoms of the patients, and
verbalizations of the patient of incomplete
knowledge.
Closing
• Margaret has been living with asthma for roughly 6
years, and 3 undiagnosed
• She has learned to adapt to symptoms and listen to
her body
• After graduation, will be working as a Kindergarten
teacher and continuing to teach studio dance and help
with her alumni school dance team
• She is thankful she is able to seek medical care and to
learn from her body
