Laboratory is a facility that

provides controlled conditions in

which scientific or technological
research, experiments, and
measurement may be performed.
Science Lab Safety Rules

1. Follow directions exactly as they are given.

2. Never taste in Science class (except if that is
part of the experiment).
3. Clean up spills as soon as you can.
4. Don’t touch supplies until you are told what to
do.
5. Report accidents as soon as they happen.
6. Use supplies carefully. Try not to waste.
7. You have a duty in your group. Do your job!
8. Clean up your area when class is over.
Science Lab Safety Rules
10. Use proper safety precaution :
- Goggles for eyes.
- Lab apron to protect clothes.
- Gloves to protect hands (chemical/heat).
11. Tie hair back.
12. Roll up long sleeves and remove
dangling
jewelry.
12. Wash hands after handling substances
and
before leaving the lab.
Laboratory
Apparatus
Beaker glass :
to hold various types of liquids
: If graduated, it can serve to
make approximate measurements
of liquid volume.
Graduated cylinder :
to get accurate
measurements of liquid
volume
Place the graduated
cylinder on a flat surface
and view the height of the
liquid in the cylinder with
your eyes directly level with
the liquid. The liquid will tend
to curve downward. This
curve is called the meniscus.
Always read the
measurement at the bottom
of the meniscus.
Eye Level Measurement
Tongs : to hold many different
things such as flasks, evaporating
dishes when they are hot
Digital Balance
to measure
small mass
in the sub-
milligram
range.
Alcohol lamp
--an open
flame
heating
source used
when low
temperature
is used
Bunsen burner
-common piece of
laboratory
equipment that
produces a single
open gas flame,
which is used for
heating,
sterilization, and
combustion.
Striker
Used to
light a
bunsen
burner
Erlenmeyer Flask
• To hold and store liquids
• Advantages of a flask is that
the mixing of its contents can
be done with little or no
spillage.
• It is made of specialized glass
so it can be heated and cooled
without breaking.
• This same type of glass makes
the flask brittle and it must be
handled carefully.
Test tube
• The function is to hold
small experiment.
• It is made of specialized
glass so it can be heated
and cooled without
breaking.
• This same type of glass
makes the flask brittle
and it must be handled
carefully.
Test tube rack
• To hold test
tubes
Test Tube Holder
• It is used to hold
test tubes without
touching them.
• It is especially
useful when
heating test tubes
over a
Bunsen/alcohol
burner or in a hot
water bath.
Ring
Stand
• It provides support
for various clamps
and rings.
• These can then be
used to hold test
tubes, beakers and
flasks.
Gloves
• used to protect
hands.
• Some gloves
protect against
temperature
extremes while
others serve as a
barrier against
harmful substances.
Goggles
• Eye
protection
is a priority
in any
science
laboratory
setting.
Pipet
• Pipettes are
devices that
allow the
users to
extract or
deliver small
amount of a
liquid.
Pipet Pump/Bulb
• Used to pull
liquid up into a
pipet tube.
Petri Dish
• It is a flat dish made
of plastic or glass
with a cover that is
primarily used to
grow bacteria.
• It can be also used to
view seed
germination or for
viewing small animal
observations.
Wash Bottle
• It is usually contain
distilled water and
makes for a convenient
method to wash out
test tubes or pipettes.
• It can also be used to
dispense chemicals
into test tubes.
Mortar and Pestle
• The mortar is
the dish, the
pestle is the
grinder.
• They are used
to crush or grind
up chemicals.
Magnifying Glass
• Used to
images of
specimens
to see them
in more
details
Wire gauze
• Placed under the
container holding the
liquid that is being
heated by the bunsen
burner so that the
container doesn’t
have a direct contact
with the flame.
