Unit # 8

Concept of Teaching
Learning
Assignment
Date 5-9-22
• Define teaching .Explain role of nurse as a
teacher.
• Differentiate between andragogy and
pedagogy.
Concept of Teaching Learning
• At the end of this unit learners will be able to:
1. Identify the learning needs of the patient at
the clinical site.
2. Develop teaching learning plan.
3. Perform health teaching at the clinical site.
What is teaching?
• Teaching is a deliberate intervention that involves
planning and implementation of instructional
activities and experience to meet intended learner
outcomes according to a teaching plan.

OR

• Teaching is the process of attending to people’s needs,

experience and feelings, and making specific
interventions to help them learn particular things.
What is learning
• Learning can be defined as the change in
behavior (knowledge, skills, attitudes) that can
occur at any time or in any place as a result of
exposure to environmental stimuli.
Identify the learning needs of the
patient at the clinical site

Learning needs are defined as:

• Gaps in knowledge that exist between a
desired level of performance and the actual
level of performance.
Steps to identify learning Needs
1. Identify the learner
2. Choose the right setting
3. Collect data on learner
4. Include learner as a source of information
5. Involve members of health team
6. Prioritize needs
7. Examine educational resources
8. Assess demands of organization
9. Take time management into account
Steps to identify learning Needs
1. Identify the learner: who is the audience? If the
audience is one individual, is there a single need
or do many needs have to be fulfilled? Is there
more than one learner? For example, an
educator may believe that all postpartum mothers
need a formal class on safety issues of their babies
2. Choose the right setting: Establishing a trusting
environment will help learners feel a sense of
security in confiding info, believe their concerns
are taken seriously and considered important ,
and feel respected.
Steps to identify learning Needs
3.Collect data on learner: Once the learner is
identified ,the educator can determine characteristic
need of the population by exploring typical health
problems or issues of interest to that population.
4. Include learner as a source of info: Allow the
patient and family members to identify what is
important to them, what types of social support
systems are available or perceived to be available
and how their social support system can help.
Steps to identify learning Needs
5. Involve members of health team: Nurses are
not the sole teachers , and they must remember
to collaborate with other members of the health
care team for a richer assessment of learning
needs.
6. Prioritize needs: A list of needs can become
endless and seemingly impossible to accomplish
Maslow’s Hierarchy of human needs may help
the educator prioritize identified learning needs.
Steps to identify learning Needs
7.Examine educational resources:
• Identification of need is useless to proceed
with interventions if the proper educational
resources are unavailable, unrealistic to
obtain.
• For example if an asthma patient requires
learning about inhaler or peak flow meter
then they should be present there so that the
patient can learn to operate them practically.
Steps to identify learning Needs
8.Assess demands of organization: this assessment
provide nurse information that reflect the educational
policies of the health care facility. So nurse should
take care of the policies and should provide learning
in accordance with the rules and regulations of
organization.
9.Take time management into account: learner must
be given time to offer their own perception of their
learning needs. Minimize interruptions and
distractions during planned assessment to save your
time.
Develop teaching learning plan
• Teaching learning plan consist of following 8 parts:
1. The purpose
2. A statement of the overall goal .
3. A list of objectives
4. An outline of related content.
5. The instructional methods used for teaching related
content
6. The time allotted for the teaching of each objectives
7. The instructional resources (material ,tool) needed.
8. The method used to evaluate learning.

Perform health teaching at the clinical site
Assessment of learner: a 24 year old male college student suffered a
7cm laceration on the left lower anterior leg during a hockey game.
The laceration was cleaned, sutured , and bandaged. The client was
given an appointment to return to the health clinic in 10 days for
suture removal. Clients states that he lives in the collage hostel and
is able to care for wound if given instructions . Client is able to
understand and read English.
• Nursing Diagnosis: Knowledge deficit related to care of sutured
wound.

Short term goal: client will respond to questions regarding wound
care.
