Overview
Respiratory Protection Program is an acceptable method of protecting an employee
from potential harmful chemical, physical and biological agents.

Health Surveillance: Monitoring the health of workers who use respirators to detect
any early signs of respiratory problems and take appropriate action.

Employee Education: Providing training and education to workers about respiratory

hazards, the importance of respiratory protection, and the correct use and care of
respirators.

Promoting a Safety Culture: Fostering a workplace culture that prioritizes health

and safety, encouraging workers to adhere to safety protocols and report any issues
related to respiratory protection.
Overview cont.
It establishes procedures for selections, use and care of respirators.

Ensuring Safety and Compliance.

Compliance with OSHA standards.

protection from airborne infectious agents.

Respiratory Protection Program requirements include: written programs, selections and use of
respirator, medical evaluations, fit-testing, training and information, respirator maintenance and care,
program evaluation.
Mask vs Respirator

Mask Respirator
• minimizes or limits the • protects an individual from the
wearer's inhaling of droplets inhalation of contaminated air or
or particles in the air. from exposure to hazardous
atmospheres
• Prevents others from illness. • keeps pollutants out of the user's
breathing zone.
• Intended for source control
• Provide a tight seal to the face.
• Do not provide a tight seal
• Designed to protect the user.
• Has restricted user’s safety
Types & Selection of
Respirators for
Healthcare
• Usually discarded after use.
Disposable Filtering Face Piece Respirator (FFR):

• Extended use and reuse maybe be authorized during shortages.

Classification
Surgical N95 NIOSH-NIOSH-approved N95 as respirator. FDA approved as surgical mask.
N95 > 95% No
N99 > 99% No
N100 > 99.97% No
R95 > 95% Somewhat
P95 > 95% Strongly
P99 > 99% Strongly
P100 > 99.97% Strongly
Reusable or Elastomeric
Respirators
• are a type of air-purifying
respirators
• reusable devices with
exchangeable filter
elements (cartridges or
filters)
• Face piece is cleaned and reused.
• Filter cartridges are discarded and
replaced when they become
unsuitable for use.
Power Air Purifying
Respirators (PAPRs)

• is a system that uses a fan

to deliver filtered air into a
variety of headgear and
facepiece options
• Battery powered.
• Blower moves the air flow
through filters.
• OHSA recommends the exclusive use of N95
respirator in health units.
• Commonly used in USA outpatient settings.
• Standardizes fit-testing, donning/doffing,
training
• Proven techniques that identify the type and
size of respirator that provides a sufficient
seal and comfort.

• There are basically two types.

Fit Testing Qualitative Fit Testing(QLFT)
Quantitative Fit Testing(QFT)

• Frequency: initially, annually and whenever

there are changes in the respirator model or
facial structure
Qualitative Fit Testing for N95s
• Pass or fail response.

Fit Testing • Detected by the wearer’s sense of taste,

smell, or involuntary cough (irritant smoke) .
cont.
• Follows Occupational Safety and Health
Administration(OSHA) standards.
Quantitative Fit Testing for N95s
• Measured by an instrument, to verify the
respirator’s fit.
Fit Testing
• Wearer be examined during regular
cont. breathing as well as other movements that
would be expected during normal use :
talking, bending over or turning from side-
to-side.
• The CDC recommends N95 masks in public
indoor spaces to best protect against severe
acute respiratory syndrome(SARS).
Usage of
• Use exclusively when helping to transfer a
N95 volunteer who exhibits symptoms of an
Respirator infectious airborne disease.
& “Seal-Fit
• The way that corrective glasses, goggles, or
Check” other PPEs are worn needs to be such that it
doesn't obstruct the face-to-face piece seal.
• Perform a seal-check every time a mask is
donned to ensure a good facial seal.
Usage of
• Mask is sealed over the bridge of the nose
N95 and mouth and there are no gaps between
Respirator the mask and the face.
• Able to breath through the mask.
& “Seal-Fit • Do not pinch the nose piece
Check” • Long beards or hair compromise facial seal,
cont. keep the groomed or probably packed.
• Check for damage or contamination before each
use.

Maintenan • Store in a clean, dry place.

ce and
care of • Avoid crushing or deforming the respirator.

N95 • Generally, N95 respirators are not designed to be

respirator cleaned or disinfected.

• Perform hand hygiene with alcohol-based hand

sanitizer or use soap and clean water before or after
touching or adjusting the N95 respirator.
• Limited reuse under specific conditions.

• Follow CDC and manufacturer guidelines.

Limits on
Reuse of • Contamination with blood, respiratory or
the N95 nasal secretions.

Respirator • Structural integrity is compromised.

• Breathing resistance increases
