1) Abridge (v) • To make shorter
• Syn: shorten, condense, abbreviate
• Ex: Textbook developers always abridge really
long selections so that the textbook does not weigh five hundred pounds. 2) Adherent (adj) • Attached; sticking to (think adhesive!) Literal-sticking to like it is glued Figurative-like sticking to a belief
• Syn: glue-like, sticking
• Ex: Wallpaper is adherent once it is wet.
3) Altercation (n) • An angry argument
• Syn: fight, disagreement,
• Ex: Dangerous altercations can occur on the
roadways of our beautiful city, so drive safely. 4) Cherubic (adj) • Resembling an angel portrayed as a little child with a beautiful, round, or chubby face
• Syn: cupid-like
• Ex: My dog looked at me with a cherubic
expression after he chewed up my favorite boots. 5) Condone (v) • To pardon or overlook; to justify
• Syn: excuse, forgive
• Ex: School administrators do not condone bad
behavior in students. 6) Dissent (v)-can also be a noun • To disagree
• Syn: to oppose, to rebel
• Ex: It is ok to dissent points made in class
discussions, as long as you have evidence to support your claim. 7) Eminent (adj) • Famous, outstanding, distinguished
• Syn: Well-known, prominent,
• Ex: Virgil Abloh is an eminent designer known
around the world for his work and accomplishments. 8) Exorcise (v) • To drive out by magic; to get rid of something troublesome (think exorcism)

• Ex: I intend to exorcise my restless sleep at night by
drinking warm milk before bed. 9) Fabricate (v) • To make, manufacture; to make up, invent
• Syn: to tell a lie, manufacture, produce
• Ex: The toddler fabricated the story of how her
long hair got cut short when her mother saw her with scissors. 10) Gluttony (n) • Engaging in extreme eating or drinking *One of the seven deadly sins!
• Syn: overindulging, excess, greed
• Ex: The man who ate sixty-seven hot dogs to win
the competition did not mind the gluttony after he got the prize money that came with his win. 11) Irate (adj) • Extremely angry
• Syn: livid, reeeeeally ticked off!
• Ex: Parents can get irate with you if you don’t
follow their directions or get salty with them. 12) Marauder (n) • A raider, plunderer (think brigand…robber, thief)
• Syn: bandit, robber, pillager
• Ex: The marauders plundered the loot off the
pirate ship after it ran aground. 13) Pauper (n) • An extremely poor person
• Syn: beggar
• Ex: We saw the pauper digging through the
dumpster behind the restaurant. 14) Pilfer (v) • To steal in small quantities
• Syn: Swipe, steal, rob
• Ex: The small boy pilfered an extra toy out of
the dentist’s candy box after his appointment with no cavities. 15) Rift (n) • A split, a break, a breach
• Syn: gap, fissure, rift
• Ex: The rift in the dam caused mass flooding
and property damage. 16) Semblance (n) • A likeness; an outward appearance
• Syn: similarity, likeness, aspect, facade
• Ex: The shadow on the ground was the
semblance of two people walking hand-in- hand. 17) Surmount (v) • To overcome; to rise above
• Syn: conquer, triumph over
• Ex: I intend to surmount the expectations that
my parents have for me so that they can be proud of my accomplishments in life. 18) Terminate (v) • To bring to an end; to fire, quit
• Syn: conclude, finish
• Ex: When I moved, I had to terminate my
contract with my gym and cell phone companies. 19) Trite (adj) • Commonplace; overused, stale
• Syn: mediocre, corny
• Ex: “YOLO” is a trite expression.
20) Usurp (v) • To seize and hold a position by force or right; to overtake without the right to do so
• Syn: illegally seize
• Ex: Many evil, greedy brothers have usurped
thrones from their brothers throughout the years. (Lion King, Hamlet, Cain and Abel, etc.)
