RULE OF THIRDS

RULE OF THIRDS
It proposes that an image should be imagined
as divided into nine equal parts by two equally
spaced horizontal lines and two equally
spaced vertical lines.

It is a guideline which applies to the process of

composing images.
PURPOSE
The theory is that if you place points of interest
in the photo on the intersections or along the
lines it creates more tension, interest and your
photo becomes more balanced.

VISUAL REPRESENTATION
OF
RULE OF THIRDS
FOR LANDSCAPE SCENIC SHOTS
For landscape shots ,position horizons along one
of the horizontal lines.
In the given picture, the upper horizontal line
divides the lower two thirds of picture from uper
third.
It also shows its not always necessary to place the
object of interest along intersection or lines, it can
be placed near the lines also.
CONT…
If you place horizon in the centre , it can give the photo a
"split in two" feel.
FOR STURDY
OBJECTS
Sturdy subjects such as cars should be positioned
off-centre in your composition on either right or left
side on the lines of grid or near them.
Objects place on grids or near them draw attention
of viewer towards them.
CONT…
If positioned in middle, can split a photo in two and
would not look pleasing to the eye or composed
properly.
FOR PEOPLE

It's a good idea to position people off to one

side of the frame. This provides some
"breathing space", shows the subject's
environment, and stops the photo from looking
like a mugshot.

We are naturally drawn to people's eyes. Place

them at one of the intersections on the rule of
thirds grid to give the shot a clear focal point.
CONT…
Negative space should be left on the side where a
person is looking.
Don’t position the person in the middle it gives a
displeasing effect.
