UNIT 1: MINERALS AND

THEIR EXPLOITATION
Lesson 2: Extraction of Mineral and
Rocks from the Earth
Introduction to Mining

● Welcome to our lesson on mining!

● Today, we'll learn about how rocks and
minerals are extracted.
● We'll explore different mining methods
and factors considered by mining
companies.
Students should be able to:
● Describe the following disturb methods of
extraction of rocks and minerals from the
earth:
- Surface mining
- Subsurface mining
● Discuss the factors that affect the decision to
extract rocks and minerals
Finding Rocks and
Minerals
● Mining companies first need
to find the rocks or minerals.
● This process is called
prospecting.
● Techniques include remote
sensing using aircraft,
drones, and satellites.
Remote Sensing
● Remote sensing involves taking photos from the air.
● Satellites can detect unique signatures of minerals like uranium.
● This helps geologists locate potential mining sites.
Seismic Waves

● Seismic waves are vibrations sent into the

Earth's crust.
● These waves reflect off different layers
and minerals.
● Sensors on the surface pick up these
reflections to locate deposits.
Evaluating Mining
Sites
● After finding a site, companies evaluate if
it's worth mining.
● Factors include geology, overburden, and
deposit size.
● Quality of the mineral deposit is also
important.

Overburden is the rock or soil layer that

needs to be removed in order to access the
ore being mined. Overburden is also referred
to as spoil or waste.
Environmental Impact
● Companies must assess the environmental impact.
● They consider how to minimize damage to habitats and local
communities.
● Plans for restoring the landscape post-mining are essential.
Accessibility and
Processing
● Accessibility of the mining site is crucial.
● Roads are needed to transport materials
and equipment.
● Proximity to processing plants and water
availability are also important.
Supply and Demand

● The success of a mine depends on supply

and demand.
● High demand and low supply increase the
mineral's price.
● Companies must balance supply to
ensure profitability.
Surface Mining
● Surface mining removes the top layer of the Earth's surface.
● Types include open pit, open cut, and strip mining.
● This method is relatively safe open pit, open cut, and strip mining
but can destroy landscapes.
Subsurface Mining

● Subsurface mining involves digging shafts

deep underground.
● It causes less surface damage but is more
dangerous.
● Miners face risks like shaft collapses.
