Light

Made by Rohan Mathur

What is light??

•- Light is essential for sight, allowing us

to see mountains, rivers, trees, people,
and countless other things around us.
•- Light is a type of electromagnetic
radiation that allows the human eye to
see or makes objects visible. It is also
defined as visible radiation to the human
eye. Photons, which are tiny packets of
energy, are found in light. Light always
moves in a straight line.
•- Example: We see the moon because it
reflects sunlight

Prisms

WHAT ARE PRISMS?!!

• Dispersion of Light: A prism can split white light into its constituent colors.
• a glass or other transparent object in the form of a prism, especially one that is
triangular with refracting surfaces at an acute angle with each other and that
separates white light into a spectrum of colours.
• Activity Example: Placing a mirror in a bowl of water and directing sunlight
onto it can show the dispersion of light, creating a spectrum on a wall.
• This phenomenon explains the formation of rainbows and the use of prisms in
various optical devices.

Multiple reflections

• Multiple reflection means reflection from various regular surfaces like

if we place the two mirrors at some angle with each other than light
reflected from more than one surface, this is an example of multiple
reflection.
• Formula to find multiple reflection on two mirrors is – n = 360/x -1
• N = no.of reflections
• X = angle in between the mirrors

What are the differences!?!?!?!

Regular Reflection Irregular reflection

Regular reflection, also known as specular • irregular reflection, or diffuse reflection,
reflection, occurs when light rays encounter happens when light rays hit a rough or
a smooth, polished surface, such as a mirror uneven surface, such as paper, cloth, or
or calm water. In this type of reflection, unpolished wood. In this scenario, the
parallel incident rays reflect in parallel, incident light rays scatter in multiple

surface. Although the law of reflection applies
locally at each point on the surface, the
scattered light results in a diffused and
unclear image, or sometimes no image

Summary
• Understanding light is crucial in optics. Light, an electromagnetic
wave, exhibits reflection and dispersion. Multiple reflections occur
with mirrors at angles, described by n = 360/x - 1. Dispersion, seen
with prisms, splits white light into colors. These principles are
foundational in designing optical devices like periscopes,
kaleidoscopes, and spectrometers
