Formula of Reverberation
Formula for Sabins:
a=ΣSα
Where:
Σ = sabins (total room absorption that exists at a given frequency)
S = surface area of material (feet squared )
α = sound absorption coefficient that exists at a given frequency or the NRC

After the calculation of a, one can make use of the Sabine Formula for calculating
the reverberation time.
Sabine Formula:
RT60 = 0.049 V/a (Also, 0.161 V/a ,where V in meter cube )
Where:
RT60 = Reverberation Time
V = volume of the space (feet cubed)
a = sabins (total room absorption that is present at a given frequency)

Q) Find reverberation time for a hall of dimensions 20m x 8m x 4m, if the absorption

ANSWER
RT =4.6 s

( RT- PROBLEM)
Q) Find reverberation time for a hall of dimensions 20m x 8m x 4m, if the absorption
coefficient of floor ,ceiling and walls are 0.02 , 0.05 and 0.05 respectively.

Solution:

(To simplify the calculation, we will not consider the glass surfaces of windows or
doors)
Reverberation Time (T60) using the Sabine’s Formula:
T60 = 0.161 x (V/A)
V = 640 m3
A = (floor: 160 m2 x 0.02) + (ceiling: 160 m2 x 0.05) + (walls: 224 m2 x 0.05)
=22.4 m2

According to these values the T60 will be 4.6 seconds.

Q) Find reverberation time for a hall of dimensions 40’ x 30’ x 20’ having average
absorption coefficient of 0.15.

ANSWER
RT =1.54 s

( RT- PROBLEM)
Q) Find reverberation time for a hall of dimensions 40’ x 30’ x 20’ having average
absorption coefficient of 0.15.

Given: L=40';W =30'; H =20';´

a=0.15
Required: τ

Solution:
RT =0.05 V/a
Volume of t h e hall ,V =40 × 30× 20=24000 ft3

Surface area of hall , S=2[(40 × 30)+(30 ×20)+(20 × 40)]

=>2(1200+600+800)=5200 ft2
Total average absorption ,a=0.15 ×5200=780
Sabin τ =(0.05 × 24000) /(780)

τ =1.54 s
