Reaction –
Argumentative
Reaction essays
In a reaction essay, you are asked to give your
“REACTION” to a quote/extract from a literary
work
You are advised to at least explain the piece you
are given with your own words to provide
context before writing about your reaction
The thesis statement for a reaction essay
should state how you FEEL about it
It’s hard to pinpoint what’s a general outline for
a reaction essay since each quote might have
different aspects you are expected to analyze
Introduction
The introduction should introduce the readers to the
THEME or the general TOPIC that quote is about as a
hook. Because the source should be given to you in
the question, remember to include a citation too
“Who Am I To Be Blind, Pretending Not To
See Their Needs?” – Michael Jackson
- Ignorance
- Helping others, especially those less
fortunate than us.
This is an amazing quote about something that
modern society seems to have forgotten about,
and I would love to share how I feel about it
Body
Specifically for reaction essays, it
might be hard to find enough ideas
to stretch to a 5-paragraph essay.
If it’s a quote, you should be able to
have a paragraph on what you think
the quote MEANS (figuratively,
literally, what are some themes that
can be drawn from it)
Then write about what you think
about the subject matter being
discussed, show your REACTION to
the ideas in the quote
Relate it to reality
