Revision 3:

Reaction –
Argumentative
Reaction essays
 In a reaction essay, you are asked to give your
“REACTION” to a quote/extract from a literary
work
 You are advised to at least explain the piece you
are given with your own words to provide
context before writing about your reaction
 The thesis statement for a reaction essay
should state how you FEEL about it
 It’s hard to pinpoint what’s a general outline for
a reaction essay since each quote might have
different aspects you are expected to analyze
Introduction
 The introduction should introduce the readers to the
THEME or the general TOPIC that quote is about as a
hook. Because the source should be given to you in
the question, remember to include a citation too
 “Who Am I To Be Blind, Pretending Not To
See Their Needs?” – Michael Jackson
 - Ignorance
 - Helping others, especially those less
fortunate than us.
 This is an amazing quote about something that
modern society seems to have forgotten about,
and I would love to share how I feel about it
Body
 Specifically for reaction essays, it
might be hard to find enough ideas
to stretch to a 5-paragraph essay.
 If it’s a quote, you should be able to
have a paragraph on what you think
the quote MEANS (figuratively,
literally, what are some themes that
can be drawn from it)
 Then write about what you think
about the subject matter being
discussed, show your REACTION to
the ideas in the quote
 Relate it to reality
Topic sentence

 Short, clear, and it should give a general

summary of what you are writing about
 Nowadays, the role of women have changed.
 There + to be + noun phrase = There are a
number of differences between A and B.
Proposed outline for the quote
version
 Introduction: state the quote + tell the readers what
you are doing
 Body:
 Body 1: Explain the quote (flip it around, explain it
literally and figuratively)
 Body 2: How do you FEEL about the quote (use adjs
that describe emotions)
 Body 3: Further explanation on the topic and theme,
any other feelings? How does it relate to what’s
happening today?/Put things into context
 Conclusion: wrap up
Example: Write your REACTION to this quote – “In a
world filled with hate, we must still dare to hope. In
a world filled with anger, we must still dare to
comfort. In a world filled with despair, we must still
dare to this
 For dream” – Michael Jackson
exercise:
 1- What does the quote mean
 2- Write a few adjs to describe your feelings. Do you
agree or disagree?
 3 – Is it relatable?
 Body paragraphs:
 Body 1:
 Talk about each of the three sentences a little bit
 “To be able to keep your positivity and thirst for life even
in bleak situations”
 Body 2: How do you FEEL about it
 An uplifting quote that made me feel better about life?
 Story: bet everything on cryptocurrency and lost -> want
to kms but didn’t
 Body 3: <Societyyyyyy>
 I think this quote is especially relevant in modern society.
 Example: 1st sentence -> hate crimes against Asians in
the US; 2nd sentence -> social justice movements turning
into reverse racism; 3rd sentence -> war in Ukraine,
Gaza, Vietnam
 Words that describe FEELINGS should be prioritized like
SHOCKING or SAD or HAPPY
 Eventhough it’s your reaction, and there are many ways to
look at a single quote, you should defend your ideas
regardless.
 I am/I feel/I find sth…
Conclusion In conclusion, I think this is an
amazing quote. It says so much
 Summarize what youabout the ability to stay positive in
life and how necessary it is,
have written
especially today, when the world is
 Make sure to tell the filled with so much grief, hatred,
readers once again and sadness. If you can maintain
what the paragraphsoptimism, there is no doubt that
were about you can open a better path in life
USE INDIRECT QUOTATIONS
direct quotes are dangerous

 According to many researchers at VNU,

allowing children to raise an animal is not
a nice point, especially when you have a
pet, as you are bringing up the germ of
rabies.
Argumentative

 Poster child of essays

 The one that starts it all
 The point is to show your knowledge of the
topic and show a well-rounded understanding of
it
Introduction

A thesis statement for an argumentative

essay has to be clear about which side you
are taking
 Assuch, the statement can span more than
1 sentence, with 1 stating your view, and the
other stating what you are discussing (just
make sure they are cohesive)
 Paraphrase cái đề + I agree/disagree
Body
 Have 2 paragraphs that SUPPORT your view and
1 that REFUTES it
 The point is to manipulate your refutation to
make your support stronger
 Two ways to develop a counterargument:
1 – Think of the counterargument FIRST using one
of the ideas on the other side while brainstorming,
then developing the refutation
2 – Begin with one of the ideas from your side and
flip it around into a counterargument
 A counter argument DOES NOT PRESENT A
DISADVANTAGE TO WEAKEN YOUR ARGUMENT. IT
PRESENTS A DISADVANTAGE AND PROVE IT WRONG
Topic: keeping rats as pets
Body 1:
Body 2: rats are smart. Some
say [they are] as smart as dogs
Body 3: [your point here
SHOULD be to convince people
that rats are cute] People often
say that rats are gross because
they are used to the kind of rats
that climb up from sewers, but in
reality, pet rats are very cute.
 Technically you do
not need to review
for the final test in
writing, but if you
do, brush up on
connectors and
transitions
Using modals will make your arguments more
credible since it shows humility and deference to
unknown knowledge
Choose either topic and draft an outline within
20 minutes. If you saw it in a test would you
pick it?

 1. Write a reaction to this quote:” "I oppose the

war in Vietnam because I love America. I speak
out against it not in anger but with anxiety and
sorrow in my heart, and above all with a
passionate desire to see our beloved country
stand as a moral example of the world.“ –
Martin Luther King
Anti-War Conference, Los Angeles, California,
February 26, 1967.
 2. Should companies hire human workers over using
autonomous machines? Do you agree or disagree

tolerance policy against drunk driving. To what
extent do you agree/disagree with this statement?
 1 – Ifblood alcohol isn’t too high, one can still stay
fully awake behind the steering wheel
 2 - Breathalyzers can be wrong.

contain alcohol. However, it is known that some
