Walter and Dekker’s (2011) study on
“Mother tongue instruction in Lubuagan: A case study from the Philippines

Lubuagan, a municipality in Kalinga, Philippines, has


successfully implemented Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual
Education (MTB-MLE).

The Department of Education (DepEd) has replicated


Lubuagan's model in other Philippine regions.

1.Transfer of Skills: Learners often draw upon the linguistic
structures and vocabulary of their L1 when learning an L2.
This transfer can be beneficial when similarities exist, such as
cognates or shared grammar rules. However, it can also lead
to interference, especially if the languages differ significantly.
