GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE

WHAT IS GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE?

• A geometric sequence is a sequence where

each term after the first is obtained by
multiplying the preceding term by a nonzero
constant called the common ratio.
EXAMPLE:
32, 16, 8, 4, 2, ... ,

Common ratio=

GEOMETRIC MEANS

• Geometric means are the terms inserted in

between any given two terms of a geometric
sequence.

Example:
in the sequence 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, the terms 4,
8, 16 are the geometric means between 2 and 32.
Insert two geometric means between 6 and 750.

Solution:
there are four terms in the given sequence:
6, ____, _____, 750
First, find r using the formula:

To complete the sequence, multiply 6 by 5, and

6,5.30, 150, 750
then multiply the result by
Find the geometric mean between 7 and 63.

Solution:
there are three terms in the given sequence:
7, ____, 63
First, find r using the formula:

7, 21, 63 or 7, -21,
63

To complete the sequence, multiply 7 by 3 or -3.

Find the three geometric means between 5 and
3125.

Solution:
there are five terms in the given sequence:
5, ____, ____, ____, 3125
First, find r using the formula:

5, 25, 125, 625, 3125

or
5, -25,125, -625, 3125

To complete the sequence, multiply 5 by 5 or -5, and

SUM OF THE FIRST TERMS OF A
GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE
The sum of a finite sequence is calculated by
the formula

where is the first term, r is the common

ratio, and n is the number of n terms.
EXAMPLE:
Find the sum of the first 5 terms of the geometric
sequence 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, …
Given:

r=2
n=5
EXAMPLE:
Find the sum of the first 12 terms of the geometric
sequence 3, -9, 27, -81, 243,…
Given:

r = -3
n = 12
SUM TO INFINITY

The sum of an infinite sequence is calculated

by the formula

where is the first term and r is the common

ratio.
EXAMPLE:
What is the sum to infinity of
