Vocabulary
perimeter
Perimeter is the distance around
the outside edge of a flat object.
Perimeter is reported as a
total number of linear units.

The perimeter of a figure is the distance around

it. To find the perimeter you can add the lengths
of the sides.
When you measure the
amount of wallpaper
border to go around a
room, you measure it in
lengths.
Would the perimeter
of your bedroom or
the perimeter of your
house be greater?

You’re right! The

perimeter of your house
is greater than the
perimeter of your
bedroom.

Perimeter

What is Perimeter?

The distance around a

two-dimensional shape.

Let’s find the perimeter of this surface if
each square is equal to one foot.
Count the number of sides.

object.

The
perimeter
is equal to
12.
Let’s do these problems
together.
Two neighbors build swimming
pools. This is what the pools
look like.
Which family has the pool with
the bigger swimming area?

Family A
Family B
The area of Family A’s pool is?
8 square units.
The area of Family B’s pool is?
7 square units

Therefore, Family A has the pool with

the bigger swimming area.

Family A
Family B
Now look at those same two pools. Which
family has more side panels of the pool to
clean?
The perimeter of Family A’s pool is 12 units long.
The perimeter of Family B’s pool is 14 units long.

Therefore, Family B has more

side panels of the pool to
clean.

Additional Example 1: Finding the Perimeter of a
Polygon
Find the perimeter of the figure.

Add all the side lengths.

2.8 + 3.6 + 3.5 + 3 + 4.3

The perimeter is 17.2 in.

Check It Out: Example 1
Find the perimeter of the figure.

3.3 in. 3.3 in.

Add all the side lengths.

3.3 + 3.3 + 4.2 + 4.2 + 3

4.2 in. 4.2 in. The perimeter is 18 in.

3 in.
Additional Example 2: Using a Formula to Find
Perimeter
Find the perimeter P of the rectangle.
12 cm
3 cm
P = 2l+ 2w
P = (2 • 12) + (2 • 3) Substitute 12 for l and 3 for w.
P = 24 + 6 Multiply.
P = 30 Add.
The perimeter is 30 cm.
Check It Out: Example 2
Find the perimeter P of the rectangle.
15 cm
2 cm

P = 2l + 2w
P = (2 • 15) + (2 • 2) Substitute 15 for l and 2 for w.

P = 30 + 4 Multiply.
P = 34 Add.

The perimeter is 34 cm.

Let’s Review
Find the perimeter of each of the
following:
1. A garden 15 meters long and 12
meters wide
2. A lot 10 meters long and 7 meters
wide
3. A swimming pool 20 meters long and
12 meters wide
1. 54 m
2. 34 m
3. 64 m
4. 154 m

Circumference
Parts of a Circle
• Radius-Straight line from the middle to the outside of
a circle

radius
• Diameter-a line that cuts the circle in half from end to
end

diameter
Circumference
• Circumference is the distance around the circle. Like
the perimeter.
Pi
• Pie is a special number. It is the ratio of the circumference and the
diameter

• Pi goes on forever!!!!!!!!!!!

• We approximate it using 3.14

 3.14
Finding Circumference

C  d

C  d 6 · 3.14 = 18.84 in.

C  (6)
6𝛑 in. would be the exact answer, but we are
going to estimate using 𝛑 = 3.14

What if you have the radius?
The radius is half of the diameter

How Would You Find the Diameter
if You Only Had the Circumference?
• It’s easy!

• When given circumference, to find diameter just divide by pi.

Circumference = 𝛑d

21.98 = 3.14d

C = 21.98 cm
