GIS based analysis for

noise pollution and sound

mapping
Research proposal

background
• Environmental pollution such as air, water ,hazardous waste and noise
pollution has always been a global concern affecting both the public’s health
and the planters fragile ecosystems.one of the serious issues of
environmental pollution is noise. Present studies shown that more than 20%
of the world population lives under unacceptable noise levels and nearly
60%of the European population is exposed to high noise levels during the
day.inorder to have common mitigation program to controlling noise levels,
European union has formulated the directive called ‘environmental noise
directive “ 2002/49/EC. GIS provides the central database management
environment and noise date .mapping noise within GIs was started in mid
90s where two approaches were used to build a noise map. However noise
calculation software are widely used for building noise maps.
Problem statement

• Pollution impacts millions of people on a daily basis. Therefore this

calls for need to model noise produced within an area various
researchers has tempted to develop models like using GIS to model a
2d map and using remote senses and machine learning to model a
noise map. Limited research on using GIS to model a 3d noise map in
developing urban centers like lira and limited database on noise
pollution levels that can help in urban planning and decision making
3d noise map will help for easy visualization and decision making,3d
maps provides complete information of noise effects in all directions .
Main objective
• To conduct spatial analysis of noise levels within lira city
Specific objectives

• To understand the different noise levels

• To provide 3D noise map for the purpose of environment decision
making.
Research questions
• Which area has the highest. Noise level in lira central division?
• How can noise levels be visualize on a 3D map?
Importance
• This research aims at identifying the noise hotspots and using GIS as a
technique to visualize a 3d sound map that can help in decision
making and improve the quality of life for urban residents
Scope

• This research is covering lira Central division located in lira municipal

council in lira district
Conceptual framework

Data collection
Spatial data using handheld gps Non spatial data using noise meter

Data analysis
Gis spatial analysis is using idw Noise levels calculations

Date output

3D noise map Conclusions and recommendations
