DARK SAID OF FAST

FASHION
what’s fast fashion?
 Fast fashion describes
low-priced but stylish
clothing that moves
quickly from design to
retail stores to meet
trends. The collections
are often based on styles
presented at Fashion
Week runway shows or
worn by celebrities. Fast
fashion allows
mainstream consumers
to purchase a new look
at an affordable price.
Advantages
 Quick to consumers: Fast
fashion enables buyers to
get the clothes they want
when they want them.
Also, it's made clothing
more affordable—and not
just any clothing, but
innovative, imaginative,
stylish clothing.
 Makes clothes
affordable: Smart new
clothes and fun or
impractical items have
become available to all
consumers.
but behind the glitz and glamour, there is
a dark side, which is often hidden.
Environmental impact

The negative
environmental
impacts of fast
fashion are
multifaceted.
Why is fast fashion bad ?
 Overconsumption of natural resources
It takes a lot of water to produce textile,
plus land to grow cotton and other fibres.
To make a single cotton t-shirt, 2,700 litres
of fresh water are required according to
estimates, enough to meet one person’s
drinking needs for 2.5 years.

The textile sector was the

third largest source of water degradation a
nd land use in 2020
. In that year, it took on average
nine cubic metres of water, 400 square
metres of land and 391 kilogrammes
(kg) of raw materials to provide clothes
and shoes for each EU citizen.
 Textile production is estimated to be
responsible for about 20% of global
clean water pollution from dyeing and
finishing products.
 Greenhouse gas emissions

The fashion industry is estimated

to be responsible for 10% of
global carbon emissions – more
than
international flights and maritime
shipping
combined.
 Textile waste in
landfills and low
recycling rates
 the fashion industry
produces a lot of waste.
Every year , millions of
tons of clothes are
discarded and much of this
waste ends up in landfills.
Less than half of used clothes
are collected for reuse or
recycling, and
only 1% of used clothes are r
ecycled
into new clothes
Impact of Fast Fashion on
Population
 90 percent of the world’s
clothing is produced in low to
middle-income countries like
Bangladesh, India, Philippines,
Indonesia, and Vietnam among
others. Each day,
approximately 40 million
workers endure excessive
workloads and below minimum
wages to assemble garments.
While the majority of garment
workers are young
womenvarious countries
implicated child labor including
China, Brazil, and Argentina.
Child labor is also a
serious problem in the
fashion industry.
How to Limit the Negative Impacts of
Fast Fashion?

that you can wear them over and over
again plus they never go out of style.
