Induction Motor

The three phase induction motor is widely used electrical motor in industrial application. An induction motor
is a type of asynchronous AC motor where power is supplied to the rotating device by means of
electromagnetic induction. Also it runs at a speed lower than the synchronous speed.

Depending on the rotor construction induction motor is classified into two categories:

Area Classification
• Ex-ec (Non – sparking)  Safe Area
• Ex-e  Zone 2
• Ex-d  Zone 2 & Zone 1
Speed & Slip of Induction Motor Torque, Mechanical Power and Rotor output
Torque derived from electrical Parameters
Torque developed at any load condition can be obtained if slip at that load is known and all standstill rotor
parameters are known.

T = Torque
Ns = Synchronous speed in r.p.s. [Ns/60]
S = Full Load Slip [s = (Ns-N)/Ns]
E2 = K x E1ph [K = Rotor turns/Stator turns]
R = rotor resistance
X = rotor reactance
Starting Torque
Starting torque is nothing but the
torque produced by an induction motor
Rotating Machine Standards as start. At start, N= 0 and slip s = 1.
