future to look like?
What is the importance of the vision?
• Bring managers and employees to work to a
common purpose
• Inspire action to achieve what may seem
impossible (challenge & motivate staff)
• Provide long term direction
• Give a strong identity & culture to the
organization
• Guide decision making
• Show the strategic intent of the organization
Example of a vision statement

choice in Rwanda or elsewhere
Example of a vision statement
Mission
• A mission specifies the business or businesses
in which the firm intends to compete and the
customers it intends to serve.
• It a statement of the purpose or reason why
the organization exists
Mission
• Answer the question: why do we exist?
• Or: Why do we do what we do?
• Or: what business are we in? What business
should we be in?
• So the mission statement focuses less on what
an organization does and more on why it does
it
MISSION
• The mission should prioritize the major
stakeholders’ interests
• Who are the stakeholders?
Those affected by the organization’s performance
and who have a claim on its performance
Those who depend on an organization to
fulfill their own goals and on whom, in turn, the
organization depends
• Stakeholders have different interests and power
Organization’s stakeholders
Example of a mission statement
• Find out the mission of an organization of your
choice in Rwanda or elsewhere
Reflect on Google’s mission:
• Where, who does Google target?
• What do they actually do? (actions)
• What impact do they want to create? Or what
do they want to change for the better? Or
What difference do they want to make?
Importance of mission statement
1. Gives meaning to the daily operations
2. Helps to achieve vision
3. Defines scope of organization’s activities
4. Identify target market or consumers
5. May specify the standards of performance
and values
If an organization has a mission, does it
need a vision?
• While a vision statement is directional and
answers the question “Where will we be in
five years?” a mission statement is
foundational and states the purpose of the
school’s existence. It answers the question
“why do we do what we do?”
• “Vision statements help organizations soar.
Mission statements keep them grounded”.
