“DESIGN & LAYOUT OF
FIELD CHANNELS”
G.SURENDER, B.E., M.Tech.,
Executive Engineer &
Senior Faculty Member,
WALAMTARI 1
DEFINITION
THE OPEN CHANNELS THAT
CONVEY IRRIGATION WATER
TO THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF
A FARM (CHAK) ARE CALLED
THE FIELD CHANNELS OR
WATER COURSES

2
FIELD CHANNELS
CONVEY WATER FROM
CANAL OUTLETS TO THE
HIGH RIDGE OF THE
FIELD AND THEN TO
PLOTS

3
CHARACTERISTICS OF FIELD
CHANNELS
Sufficient capacity to
deliver the required
quantity of water to any
point
Control the flow of water
Minimize soil erosion
Minimum seepage losses
Weed control
Minimum labour
requirement for operation
The cost of construction
should be minimum 4
PLANNING AND DESIGN
 FOR PLANNING OF FIELD
CHANNELS FOLLOWING DATA AND
MAPS ARE NECESSARY
1. CONTOUR MAP OF A CHAK
SHOWING CONTOURS AT DESIRED
INTERVAL AND THE FIELD
BOUNDARIES
2. NAMES OF BENEFICIARIES AND
THEIR SURVEY NOs ,GATE NOs
3. TYPE OF SOIL IN THE CHAK
COMMAND
5
ALIGNMENT
Depending upon the
topography
Field channels are aligned
on the ridge with irrigation
on both sides
Field channels are aligned
along the contours with
irrigation on one side only 6
SECTION OF FIELD CHANNEL
Contours are marked with 30 cm
interval in the cadastral plan to a
suitable scale after grid survey
and this is made use of for
planning the irrigation and
drainage network and land
leveling and shaping
For one cusec field channel(30
litre /sec); 23x23 cm section is
very difficult for practical point of
view as it is a very narrow section 7
SECTION OF FIELD
CHANNEL
Recommended bed width is 30
cm and necessary depth and
slope to draw a discharge of one
cusec or 30 litre /sec for
implementing turn system
Normally the cross section is in
full cutting
When it is not feasible cross
section may be half cutting and
half filling 8
TRANSMISSION
LOSSESS
The total transmission
losses during conveyance
of the water including in
the field channels will
vary from 30% to 40%
depending upon terrain
and type of soil etc.
9
DESIGN OF FIELD CHANNELS

Channel is designed for a duty of

100acres or 40 ha Irrigated dry per
cusec
Channel is designed for a duty of 40
acres or 16 ha Irrigated wet per cusec
Manning’s formula
V=1/n R2/3 S1/2
Where V= Velocity in m/s
R=Hydraulic radius in m =A/P
10
DESIGN OF FIELD
CHANNELS
A = Area of cross section square
metre
P = Wetted perimeter m
S = Hydraulic gradient
n = Coefficient of rugosity
Therefore discharge Q = A x V
cumecs
For FCs n = 0.012 to 0.018 (lined
chanels)
n= 0.025 to 0.030
For earthen channels without
vegetation 11
RECOMMENDED SIDE
SLOPES
Black cotton soils 1 ½ : 1
Loam 1½:1
Murram 1½:1
Hard soils 1 : 1 to ½
:1

12
RECOMMENDED PERMISSIBLE
VELOCITIES
In earthen channels
Black cotton soils 1’/ sec. or 0.3 m/s
Loams 1 ½ ‘ /sec. or 0.45 m/s
Murram 2’/sec. or 0.60 m/sec

Hard soils 2 ½ ‘ to 3’/sec or

0.75 to 0.9 m/sec

13
OTHER DESIGN
DATA
Free board should be
20% of the depth of
flow
Bed slope generally
works out to 1 in 500
to 1 in 1000
