WINTER
Cultism can be traced to the formation of Pirate
Confraternity by Professor Wole Soyinka in 1952 at
University of Ibadan. TheTemplate
idea was to train young Nigerians,
who would uphold the nation’s heritage and eschew tribalism
and bad behaviour. Members consisted of intelligent and
responsible undergraduates of the university, who were
interested in politics.
Currently, the story is not the same. Many other cult groups
now exist within and outside the school system, without any
proper identification of the reasons for which they were
setup. They include Black Eye, Bucaneers, Black Axe,
Daughters of Jezebel, Red Devils, Amazon, Temple of Eden
etc. Cultism is one of the social problems in educational
institutions.
