DESKTOP PUBLISHING(DTP)

Desktop Publishing is the design and production of publications such


as newsletters, flyers, brochures, gift certificates, business cards by
means of specialized software enabling a personal computer to
generate typeset-quality text and graphics.
Examples DTP software/ programs include
Scribus ,LyX,Fatpaint(Cloud-based),AdobeInDesign ,Adobe
PageMaker ,Corel Draw ,FrameMaker, Microsoft
Publisher,PageStream,Prince XMl ,QuarkXPress, PrintShop among
others
A good DTP program should provide, among other things,
a. Facilities to fit text into irregular shapes in a variety of fonts and
sizes.
b. Manipulation of the shapes and sizes of photos or artwork
imported.
c. Building of columns, headers and footers on the design layout.
d. Precise control over templates, styles, fonts, sizes, color,
paragraph formatting, images and fitting text into all shapes

A DTP package allows a user much more flexibility with the layout of
text and graphics while a word processing package is generally
Rhythm: Consistency and repetition are evident throughout the publ
ication (for multiple pages or related publications
Planning a publication
a.
Font selections should be limited in number, easy to read, and lar
ge
enough for the intended audience to scan.
b.
Text frames should be in proportion to the page margins and borders
.
Be
careful of placing too much text on one side of a publication. Think a
bout
balance between space and objects.
c.
Graphics should complement your content and design without distra
cting the viewer.
d.
Simple colors should be used. Choose opposites that contrast well. Li
ght
text on a dark background or dark text on a light background provide
s good contrast.
e. Consider the readability of some color schemes.
d.Borders and backgrounds should be consistent and compliment the
content.
Pre-publishing Activities
It is very easy to become lost in the development of a publication
without
somebasic organization. Think about the following when creating a
publication:
1. What kind of publication do you need?
2. What features do you want to include?
3. Who is your audience?
4. What is your goal? Write with your goal in mind!
5. What extra features will you include (borders, tables, etc.)?
6. What do you want it to look like? Would it be a good idea to stor
yboard
your publication?
7. What colors do you plan to use?
8. What graphics will you use to support your content?
Creating Publications
Knowledge learnt in creating a particular publication can be applied
in creating other publications e.g information about creating a flyer
can be
applied to creating other publications.
