Catalogue Service for the Web

(CSW)
By Group One
Catalogue Service for the Web
• This is a standard defined by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) that
facilitates the publication and discovery of geospatial metadata over the
Internet.
• CSW is designed to expose a catalogue of geospatial records in XML format,
allowing users to discover, browse, and query metadata about various geospatial
resources, including datasets, services, and related information.
• It provides a structured approach (framework) to metadata representation and a
set of operations that enable the registration and retrieval of metadata, which
describes the characteristics of these resources.
Key Features of CSW

1. Metadata Representation 6. Metadata Discovery

2. Supported Operations 7. Standardized Queries
3. Query Languages 8. Metadata Management
4. Profiles 9. Interoperability
5. Installation and Configuration
The core fields required in a CSW
1. Title: A descriptive name for the resource.
2. Format: The format of the resource (e.g., KML, GeoJSON).
3. Type: The type of resource, which can be a Dataset, DatasetCollection, or Service.
4. Bounding Box: A geographical area of interest, expressed as a rectangle defined
by latitude and longitude coordinates.
5. Coordinate Reference System: The spatial reference system used for the
resource.
6. Association: A link to another metadata record, which may provide additional
context or related information.
Common operations that can be
performed to interact with the service.
• GetCapabilities
• DescribeRecord
• GetRecords
• GetRecordById
• GetDomain
• Harvest (optional)
• Transaction (optional)
Use Cases for CSW in real-world
geospatial applications
• Geospatial Data Discovery Portals: Organizations can use CSW to create portals that allow
users to search for and access geospatial datasets and services.
• Research and Analysis: Researchers can use CSW to find relevant datasets for their studies,
facilitating data discovery and retrieval [T1], [T5].
• Metadata Catalogues: Organizations use CSW to build and manage catalogs of geospatial
metadata, improving data accessibility and management.
• Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs): CSW is often a core component of SDIs, enabling the
discovery and sharing of geospatial information across different agencies and organizations.
