AIM : Preparation and Evaluation of
Polyherbal liquid shampoo

 1. OBJECTIVE

• To formulate a polyherbal liquid shampoo

• To evaluate the prepared shampoo

22
2. INTRODUCTION

A shampoo may be described as a cosmetic preparation meant for the

washing of hair and scalp.

Its primary function is of cleansing the hair of accumulated sebum,

scalp debris and residue of hair grooming preparation.
In the present scenario, the herbal shampoo is better in
performance and safer than the synthetic ones.

Formulating the shampoo which is chemical free and instead contains

the herbal extracts which can be the best alternative against the
chemical based shampoos and also may show better safety and efficacy.
33
3. Ideal Characteristics of Herbal Shampoo

 Easy rinsing
 Good finish after washing hair
 No damage to hair
 Low toxicity
 Good biodegradability of ingredients
 Minimal skin/eye irritation
 Slightly acidic(pH less than 7), since a basic
environment weakens the hair by breaking the
disulfide bonds in hair keratin 44
4. Benefits of Herbal Shampoo

 More shine
 Less hair loss
 Long lasting color
 Stronger and more fortified hairs
 All natural, no chemicals

55
5. Herbal liquid shampoo vs Synthetic shampoo
Synthetic products are chemical based products which might have
some risky chemicals.

Herbal shampoos are plant extract shampoos which have not any side
effects, are less risky and naturally friendly.

Various chemicals and synthetic preservatives used in synthetic

shampoos sometimes have been the cause of harmful effects among
consumers.

As our scalp is one of the most absorbent parts of the body, products
applied to the scalp enter directly into the blood. So it is very important
to know the effects of ingredients used in shampoo formulations. 66

8. Methodology
Cleaning : Fresh plant parts were washed thoroughly under running water to
remove contaminants.

Drying : Fresh plant parts were dried in shade until completely desiccated.

Grinding : Dried plant parts were ground into coarse powders using a
suitable grinder.

Sieving : The coarse powders were passed through a sieve with a mesh size
of 120 to obtain fine powders.

Weighing : The required quantities of each herbal powder were weighed

accurately.

Mixing : The weighed powders were mixed thoroughly in a clean container 12

9.2 Determination of pH
•The pH of the shampoo formulations was measured
to ensure compatibility with the scalp's natural pH.
•A 10% solution of each shampoo in distilled water
was prepared and the pH was determined using a pH
meter and Litmus paper at room temperature (25°C).

9.3 Washability
• Place the hair swatches in a beaker containing the
prepared shampoo solution.
• Use a magnetic stirrer or similar tool to gently agitate
the solution for a set time (typically 2- 5 min)
• This mimics the washing action on the scalp.
• Alternatively, some methods may involve manually
working the shampoo solution through the hair Figure : 4
swatches for a set number of strokes.

9.4 Foaming Index
• The cleansing ability of a shampoo is paramount,
consumers often associate abundant lather with a more
effective cleaning experience.
• This perception makes foaming characteristics a crucial
factor in shampoo evaluation, despite minimal
correlation between foaming and actual cleaning
power.
• This test assesses the volume and stability of foam
generated under standardized conditions
• The resulting foam height or volume is then measured

9.6 Viscosity
•Viscosity, a measure of a liquid's resistance to flow, is a
critical property of liquid shampoos.
• It directly influences factors such as product
consistency, application ease, and the formation of foam.
• To accurately assess and control viscosity, the Brookfield
viscometer is a widely used instrument
20

9.7 Microbial Assay
• A microbial assay is a valuable tool for evaluating a
shampoo's antimicrobial properties.
• By testing the shampoo against a variety of
microorganisms, researchers can access its ability to inhibit
or kill harmful bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms
that may be present on the scalp

10. Conclusion
 The world market is also moving towards herbal
medicines for health care, health and for cosmetic
purposes including hair preparations.

 All ingredients used for the preparation of herbal

shampoo are safer than marketed commercial herbal
shampoos.

 It was concluded that the formulated polyherbal liquid

shampoos which were prepared by using the
herbs, shows fewer side effects compared to the
shampoo that are prepared by using various synthetic 22
