SUBJECT: ENGLISH AND PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION PAPER CODE: AECC 101 BBA 1 st sem ORIGINS The field of intercultural communication originated in the 1950s with the publication of Edward T. Hall's book The Silent Language. Hall's work was influenced by the Culture and Personality School of Anthropology at Columbia University, Freudian psychoanalysis, and the Sapir-Whorf school of structural linguistics. The International Communication Association (ICA), the Speech Communication Association, and the National Communication Association (NCA) all established divisions for intercultural communication. DEFINiTION Intercultural communication is a discipline that studies communication across different cultures and social groups, or how culture affects communication. It describes the wide range of communication processes and problems that naturally appear within an organization or social context made up of individuals from different religious, social, ethnic, and educational backgrounds. TYPES OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS: 1. CROSS CULTURAL COMMUNICATION: Cross-cultural communication is the study of how people from different cultures communicate with each other, and how to improve communication across cultural divides. It involves recognizing and respecting differences and similarities between cultures, and using verbal and nonverbal communication skills to effectively engage with others. TYPES OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS: 2. INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION: The capacity to communicate with people from diverse cultures is referred to as intercultural communication. Interacting effectively across cultural lines requires perseverance and sensitivity to one another's differences. This encompasses language skills, customs, ways of thinking, social norms, and habits. TYPES OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS: 3. ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION: Intercultural communication in an organization is the exchange of ideas and information between people from different cultural backgrounds. It's important for fostering a positive work environment, promoting collaboration, and achieving overall success. BENEFITS OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION 1.SELF AWARENESS: Intercultural communication can help raise awareness of our own cultural identity and background. 2.GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS: Training employees to be sensitive to global perspectives can help a company's growth when entering the international market. 3. BUILDING RELATIONSHIP: Intercultural communication skills can help build genuine, sustainable relationships with people from other countries. 4. ADAPTIBILITY: Being adaptable is crucial in an intercultural workplace, where there may be different expectations, processes, and ideas than you're used to. IMPROVING OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS: 1. AQUIRE CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE: Educating yourself on the fundamentals of intercultural communication, such as language and gestures, is just as important as expanding your knowledge of the world’s diverse cultures. 2. SPEAK TO PEOPLE: In-depth conversations with people about their backgrounds and the culture shock they may have felt upon arriving in your country can yield a great deal of valuable knowledge and perspective. 3.WATCHING INTERNATIONAL SHOWS: international films in their original language proves far more rewarding than enduring subpar English dubs. It’s akin to embarking on a sensory journey, where the cadence of speech, the inflections, and the expressions hold the essence of the culture itself.
