Introduction to LaTeX:
 A LaTeX is a high quality open source typesetting system that is
very popular in publishing books, research articles etc.
 The initial development of LaTeX was motivated by the need to
develop technical documents.

Comparison with Microsoft Word: Why LaTeX?

 MS Word is a professional application software developed


by Microsoft Inc.
 It has its own set of advantages and limitations.
 Advantages: Simple to use, easy to start for beginners
 Limitations: Difficulty to maintain uniformity., Lack of
good control over document structure., Customizations is
low, Proprietary Software.
 MS Word is a proprietary software. One should purchase its
licensed version for legal use.
 Latex is an open source software. Overcomes most of the
limitations of MS word. Only disadvantage: Difficulty to
start with for Beginners

Need and Importance of LaTeX in academia and
research
 At present, in most of the universities around the world, students
have to submit their dissertation/thesis/project report in LaTeX.
 Besides, most of the peer-reviewed journals and academic publishers
demand the author to send the paper/article in the LaTeX format.
 In case of Nepal, most of us have been using pirated version of MS
Word! If Microsoft Inc. wants, it could easily take serious action
against us.
 Thus, to increase the value and credibility of our documents, there is
a need to switch to open source softwares like LaTeX for publishing
our academic documents.

Installation and Configuration of LaTeX
typesetting system in Windows based OS
Texmaker: Text editor with LaTeX support. Have features to aid in
typesetting LaTeX code.
Texlive: LaTeX Engine. Consists of different tools that altogather
implements the LaTeX engine. Works like a compiler to compile
LaTeX code.

Working in LaTeX
Basic Structuring of a Document: Title, Title Page, Abstract, List of
Tables, List of Figures, Chapter, Section, Subsection, paragraph, etc
Placing Figures, Tables, Header, Footer, footnotes etc
Typesetting Mathematics: Square, cube and nth roots, Superscript,
Subscript, Fractions, Vectors, Differential equations, Integral
Equations, Maxwell’s Equations, Fourier Integrals, Fourier
Transforms, Diode equations etc.
Bibliography and Referencing(APA, IEEE etc)
Typesetting Chemical Equations
