• What is x bar theory ?
: Definition of x bar theory

 "X-bar theory is a model of phrase-structure grammar and a theory of syntactic


category formation that was first proposed by Noam Chomsky in 1970 and
further developed by Ray Jackendoff, along the lines of the theory of generative
grammar put forth in the 1950s by Chomsky." (Maurya, 2023)
X bar divided into several levels

1. X bar : represent the head of the phrases , this head usually :


Nouns , verbs , adjective , or proposition depending on this type of
phrase .
2. XP : X phrase is called the maximal projection
Three main levels of x bar
