WHAT IS AUTOCAD?
AutoCAD is a computer-aided design software
developed by the company Autodesk (hence the
name AutoCAD).
It allows you to draw and edit digital 2D and 3D
designs more quickly and easily than you could by
hand.
Who Uses AutoCAD?
z
Interior designer.
Industrial engineer.
Manufacturing engineer.
The Application menu appears when you click the red “A” called the Application
Button.
This menu contains file-related commands such as creating a new file, opening an
existing file, saving the current file, saving the current file under a new name and in
a different folder, exporting the current file to a different file format, printing and
publishing the current file, etc.

TITLE BAR
FILE TABS
File tabs are located beneath the ribbon. For each opened file a tab is created. You
can easily switch between different drawing files by using the file tabs.
z
DRAWING AREA
The Command Window is docked in the bottom left of the drawing area and
displays prompts, options, and messages. The Command Window is used to
input commands, typically by using a keyboard, as an alternative to using the
command palette that is in the bottom of the left-side panel.
z
UCS ICON
You can see an L-shaped line in the lower-left corner of the drawing area. It is
called the UCS icon; UCS is short for “User Coordinate System.”
The UCS is the active coordinate system that represents the XY plane in 2D and
XYZ planes in 3D. It acts as the direction in the X, Y, and Z-axis for drawing and
modeling. We can control the origin and orientation of the UCS to make drawings
according to the specific points and coordinates.
There are two coordinate systems in AutoCAD. World Coordinate System (WCS)
and User Coordinate System (UCS) which define the angle of the XY plane you are
working in. The WCS should always be used to reference geometry to ensure
everything aligns to the centre of a file in real-world location.

NAVIGATION BAR
The View Cube is a navigation tool that is displayed when you are working in 2D
model space or 3D visual style. With View Cube, you can switch between standard
and isometric views. The View Cube is a persistent, clickable and draggable
interface that you use to switch between standard and isometric views of your
model.
