CHEMISTRY
Parts Per Million (PPM)

-is a unit used to describe very small

concentrations of a substance in a larger
solution
- PPM means 1 per every 1,000,000 or
1/1,000,000

1/1,000,000
Parts Per Million (PPM)
VALUE OF PPM
1 PPM is equal to 0.0001 percent of the
solution. It is equal to 1 milli- of other units
such as a milligram per liter of water,
milligram per kilogram, etc. It is also the
1/1,000,000 fraction of something.
Parts Per Million (PPM)
Ppm= mass of solute x 1,000,000
mass of the solution
Ex. 5g of salt dissolved in 500ml of water
Sol’n: 5g/500ml x 1,000,000
= 10,0000 PPM
Parts Per Million (PPM)
ex. determine the proportion of 0.2 grams (g)
of salt in 0.98 liters (L)
Mole Fraction
- the ratio of the number of moles of one
component of a solution or other mixture
to the total number of moles representing
all of the components
Mole Fraction
Formula:
Mole fraction of solute=Moles of solute
Moles of solute + Moles of
solvent
Mole fraction of solvent=Moles of solvent
Moles of solute + Moles of
Mole Fraction
Ex. A tank is charged with a mixture of 1.0 x 103 mol
of oxygen and 4.5 x 103 mol of helium. Calculate
the mole fraction of each gas in the mixture.
Mole Fraction
Ex. NHe = 4.5 x 10 mol and NO2 = 1.0 x 10 mol
3 3

Mole fraction can be calculated as

XHe = 4.5 x 10 mol / (4.5 x 10 mol + 1.0 x 10 mol)
3 3 3

XHe = 4.5 mol / 5.5 mol

XHe = 0.82
XO2 = (2.0 x 10 mol / (4.5 x 103 mol + 1.0 x

Mole Fraction
Ex.Determine the mole fraction of CH3OH
and H2O in a solution prepared by
dissolving 5.5 g of alcohol in 40 g of
H2O. M of H2O is 18 and M of CH3OH
is 32.
Mole Fraction
Ex.Solution
Moles of CH3OH = 5.5 / 32 =
0.17 mole
Moles of H2O = 40 / 18 = 2.2
moles
Therefore, according to the
equation
