GOOD DAY…..

REFLECTION
Reflection is the
throwing back by a
body or surface of light,
heat, or sound without
absorbing it.
Reflection occurs when the
waves encounter a surface or
other boundary that does not
absorb the energy of the
radiation and bounces the
waves away from the surface.
Differentiate the two types
of reflection as shown in
the figure…
*A regular or specular reflection is a
reflection from very smooth surface like
mirror.

* An irregular or diffuse reflection is a

reflection from a relatively rough
surface.
How can you
describe the
reflection of light in
plane mirrors?
Images formed by plane mirrors are
always virtual, upright, the same in size
as the object, the same distance behind
the mirror as the object is in front of the
mirror, laterally reversed. It means that
left of the object becomes the right of
the image and vice versa.
What are the two
types of images
formed during
reflection?
*Real Image - formed in front of the mirror
and it is always upside down relative to the
object, it can be projected on a screen
placed in front of mirror.

*Virtual Image – formed behind the mirror

and is upright relative to the object and
cannot be projected on a screen.
Suppose there is a girl, with a
height of 3ft, is facing 2 feet
away from a plane mirror, as
she puts blush-on on her right
cheek. Describe the image form
by the mirror.
The image formed in the mirror is
literally reversed but same size and
distance. So the image will look like a
girl that is two feet at the back of the
mirror, meaning the image is virtual, it is
sitting and with same size of 3ft and
putting blush-on on her left cheek.
How images in a
plane mirror look like
it is at the back of the
mirror?
What are the steps
in locating images in
front of a plane
mirror using ray
diagram?
Drawing Ray Diagrams for Plane Mirrors:
1. Draw a simple object and label one endpoint A and other point as B
2. Draw a line to represent a mirror
3. Draw the incident ray from point A directly to the mirror at 90
degree angle and draw the reflected ray back along the same line
4. Draw the second ray from point A at an angle toward the mirror
5. Draw the normal where this ray strikes the mirror
6. Use the law of reflection to draw the reflected ray
7. Use dashed line to extend the reflected rays behind the mirror and
find were they meet
8. Repeat steps 3-7 for point B
Steps for drawing a plane mirror
diagram: (short cut)
1. A ray that strikes perpendicular to the mirror
surface, reflects perpendicular to the mirror.
This reflected ray is extended behind the mirror.
2. A ray that strikes the mirror at any angle
reflects so that the angle of incidence equals the
angle of reflections; the reflected ray is
extended behind the mirror.
Try this:
A letter “R” (2cms tall) is
placed 35cm in front of a plain
mirror. Locate the imaged
formed by the object using ray
diagram.
Try this:
A letter “S” (1.5cms tall) is
placed 15cm in front of a plain
mirror. Locate the imaged
formed by the object using ray
diagram.
