FARM MECHANISATION
(FPY 434)
Course lecturers: Engr.(Dr) I.A. Ola
Engr.(Dr) Aderinlewo Department of Agric. and Bio- resources Engineering. MECHANIZATION • Mechanization – Systems for aiding Farming processes • Plant • Animal husbandry – optimum management of time and – harness all farm inputs minimally – To increase productivity and quality of product REASONS FOR MECHANIZING 1. To remove farm drudgery 2. For timely execution of all farm activities 3. To prevent farm losses and wastage of product during and after harvesting 4. Quality assurance of agric. Produce to stable form and to enhance the market value 5. Increase productivity on all farm products 1. Produce in large quantities of raw materials for industries and domestic use 2. E.g. cassava starch for textile industries and for making foodstuff would make the demand for cassava to be high 6. To generate income and livelihood to farmers and Nigeria as nation • Reduce dependence on imported goods • Thereby improving the national economy • Which in turn strengthens our currency Benefits of mechanization 1. Patronizing Nigerian made goods is the bed rock to our national development as a nation self sufficient in food productivity. – Easiest root to youth empowerment – Wealth creation 2. Creating more employment opportunities for youths – Both trained and untrained hands – Putting food on people table 3. A nation putting food on other nations wedges a great power RIGHT ATTITUDE God has blessed Nigeria with good soil and favorable weather that can bring great productivity to Nigerians . So as youth with great future we need to put our hands in operating machines in the area of agricultural mechanization and generate vast products to the benefit of our land. • Honesty in research work • Timely data taken • Keeping of adequate records of all farming activity that will aid mechanization of a given crop • Good report writing on well analyzed farm activities is a great assets to mechanization. – Findings from such results are tools for the Agricultural engineer to develop a new system or machine to aid productivity. ELEMENTS OF MECHANIZATION • Mechanization allows you to harness all primary and secondary farm inputs into end products. It optimize all the inputs for greater outputs productivity. – Land : machines for land clearing – Seeds: planter – Fertilizer fertilizer applicator » Manure spreader – Water : sprinkler or drip irrigator – Weeds and pests control : boom sprayer or knap sack sprayer or powered mowers ASPECTS OF FARM MECHANIZATION • SOIL AND WATER – Plant and land careland survey, soil test, construction of dams; irrigation schemes, drainage engineering, erosion control and soil stability etc • FARM STRUCTURES – construction of feasible water storage system for crop use e.g. dams, road net works for quick access to farms for transportation of produce. – Storage of crops: barns, cribs, silos (traditional concrete or steel) – Farm house and structures for rearing animals – Farm layout and environmental studies – Energy generation(wind mill, water turbine etc) – Waste generation and management – Green and screen house construction • FARM POWER – Field machines – Production of new machines for agricultural productions – Energy management within the farm stead – Energy auditing , equipment matching to meet farmers need – Field preparation and other field activities to the point of harvesting is handled by this aspect – Power sources, generation and utilization • FOOD PROCESSING POST HARVEST OPERATIONS – COMBINE HARVESTERS ; FOR GRAINS – THRESHERS; FOR CROPS LIKE RICE AND COWPEA – SHELLERS :FOR MAIZE AND GROUNDNUT – MILLERS; EG BUR MILL, HAMMER MILL FOR SIZE REDUCTION – WASHERS: CLEANING AGRIC PRODUCE • PRESS: EXTRACTING JUICE OR DEWATERING AND OIL EXTRACTION • DRYERS:FOR DRYING CROPS • WINNOWERS: REMOVING CHAFFS • SORTEERS: FOR GRADING OF AGRIC PRODUCE Any of the machines are readily available in the market and produced locally. RECORDS • In all your activities record keeping is essential, this would help in evaluating your productivity at the end of the period. – Time – Capacity(farm area and machine size) • Rate of work done e.g. seeding rate – Population density – Yield/ handling/ post harvests operations THANK YOU FOR LISTENING
