TOPIC

Lengths of tangents drawn from an

external point on a circle

OBJECTIVE
To verify that the lengths of
tangents drawn from an external
point to a circle are equal.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
• Rectangular sheet of paper.
• Geometry box.
• Sketch pens.
• Fevistick.

PRE- REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE

Meaning of tangents of a circle.
PROCEDURE
1. Draw a circle with any radius and
center O on a rectangular sheet of
paper.
2. Take a point P outside the circle.
3. Fold the paper in such a way that it
passes through P and just touches
the circle at point A.
4. Press the two sides together so that
a straight line crease is formed.
5. Unfold the paper, draw line
PA then PA is tangent to
circle at A.
6. Repeat step 3 to get
another tangent PB to the
circle at B.
7. Join OA, OB and OP and
colour them.
8. Fold the paper along line
RESULT
We observe that triangle OAP
exactly covers triangle OBP.
Therefore PA = PB.

It verifies that length of tangent

drawn from an external point to
a circle are equal.
