INTRODUCTION
The rapid growth in urban areas has led to an increase in traffic congestion, resulting in a long traffic
line, higher fuel consumption, and elevated levels of pollution.
To address these challenges, the development of an Intelligent Traffic Light System(ITLS) is crucial.
By leveraging technologies such as machine learning, sensor network, ITLS can dynamically adjust
traffic flow based on current traffic flow reducing congestion and improving overall traffic efficiency.
The system not only optimizes traffic but enhances road safety and reduces environmental impact.
This presentation will focus on the prototype for an Intelligent Traffic Light System, showcasing the
design process, key components and the initial testing result.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
• The current traffic light systems have some problems that need to be addressed. One major issue is
that they operate on fixed timers, regardless of the actual traffic conditions. This can cause
unnecessary congestion and long waiting times at intersections, especially during peak hours.
Another problem is the lack of real-time data. Traditional traffic lights don't have the ability to
detect and respond to the changing traffic patterns. As a result, traffic flow isn't optimized, and
drivers end up wasting time and fuel.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
AIM:
• Design of an Intelligent Traffic Light System(ITLS)
OBJECTIVES:
To design a prototype for an intelligent traffic light control system using microcontroller and IR
sensor
The scope is the design of an intelligent traffic control system. The modern method of traffic control
system is indicating each light at a particular time interval to pass a vehicle at one lane and stop
vehicle on the other lane.
The light is broken into three (3) categories (Red, Yellow, and Green) to signal to lane on what to do
at a particular time where the red signify STOP, yellow signify READY, and green signify MOVE.
Each light is designed to turn itself on whenever it is necessary and turn off the time elapse
METHODOLOGY
The intelligent Traffic Light System operates based on a combination of algorithmic control, hardware
components, and real time sensor data to manage traffic flow efficiently at a 4 way intersection. The
operation can be broken down in two phases: standard operation and congestion detection
METHODOLOGY
o Standard Operation: It uses an algorithm designed to manage a 4 way intersection where two
opposite directions are given a green light while the other two directions are red. This ensures a
controlled and orderly flow of traffic. The system is programmed to alternate the traffic lights
between the two phases at regular intervals ensuring each direction receives an equal opportunity.
o Congestion detection: This system is equipped with Infrared(IR) sensors on each road leading to the
intersection. These sensors constantly monitor the traffic conditions. When the sensor detects a
buildup of vehicles on a particular road, indicating congestions and send a signal to the ESP32
microcontroller. The microcontroller then processes the data and overrides the standard timing
sequences. It switches the light to green for the congested road to alleviate traffic buildup. After the
congested road is cleared, the system returns back to its regular operation, resuming the scheduled
alternation of green and red lights
