Introducti
different types of sockets in a building
depend mainly on the type and use of
that building . The position and height
on: -
of the sockets in all electrical
installations should not be selected in a
random way. The wiring of many
houses is spoilt by placing socket
outlets indiscriminately regard to the
position of the character of the
apparatus to be connected to them.
Socket design
• Types of sockets: Distribution of different outlets (Sockets) types in the
buildings depends mainly on the type and application of that building.
1. Normal Sockets
2. Power Sockets
3. Water proof Sockets
4. U.P.S Sockets
5. Emergency Power Sockets
6. Three Phase Power Sockets
• Normal Sockets:
• They are used mainly for light loads only. socket is 200 VA.
• Cable C.S.A is 3 mm2. The rating of each normal
• Number of sockets in a certain room depends on the usage
and the area of the room.
• Generally, we put one socket every 3 meters and there
are 5: 7 sockets on the circuit.
• M.C.B. rating for normal socket = 20A.
Normal
Sockets:
• They are used mainly for light loads
only. socket is 200 VA.
• Cable C.S.A is 3 mm2. The rating of
each normal
• Number of sockets in a certain room
depends on the usage and the area of
the room.
• M.C.B.
rating for normal socket = 20A.
Power Sockets:
They are used mainly for heavy loads such as heaters,
dishwasher, microwave, freezer, exhaust fans, oven, and
cleaners.
• The rating of each power socket between 2000VA.
• Cable C.S.A is 4 mm2.
• M.C.B. rating for power socket = 25 A.
• Each power socket is a single circuit directly connected
to the panel board.
• These sockets are called power sockets and they
require higher current rating and taking into consideration
the surge period which increases the delivered current
higher than rated current at running operation.
Water Proof
Power
Sockets:
• Sockets with IP covers against water and
dust .
• Used in bathrooms , corridors , kitchens ,
stores ,…etc.
• Could be single or double socket .
• Same specifications of general sockets .
• 2 or 4 modules according to single or
double socket.
It has some properties as:
1. high resistance for water &dust.
2. it has good insulation resistance.
U.P.S
Sockets:
• Supplied from UPS .
• UPS supplied from diesel generator .
• UPS sockets should be with different
color.
• Same specifications of general sockets
except color .
Examples of UPS sockets
1. Hospitals operations
rooms
2. Control systems
3. Computers and servers
4. IT racks
Emergency
Power
Sockets:
Emergency power sockets provide
electricity during outages using backup
power sources like batteries or
generators. They're crucial in places
like hospitals and data centers where
uninterrupted power is essential.
Mainly used in ventilation systems and
Safety and Security safety and
surveillance to systems to ensure guest
and property safety.
• Each socket is a single circuit
directly connected to the panel board.
Three Phase Power Sockets:
• some types of sockets and its connectors and countries that use
these types:
M e th o d s o fL a y o u t:
1-Wall Mounted
Sockets are mounted on wall at different locations.
On 30 cm from floor if there is not furniture.
On 120 cm from floor if there is furniture.
2- Floor Mounted
• For under floor trucking system is required enables a quick and neat
installation of all the new buildings as well as for the refitting of modern
facilities, airports and office areas, an cables and equipment for power,
communications and data processing, yet permitting the clean combination
of a number of different cable layouts within the same trucking.
• Must have IP very high (IP:67).
3.Furniture Mounting
• Furniture mounting sockets are hardware used to connect parts
of furniture, like table legs to tabletops. They provide a secure
connection and are often used in flat pack furniture for easy
assembly and disassembly.
• Distribution of sockets:
1. According to furniture demand
2. According to codes
Distribution board and wiring:
• According to the code any line carries 2000VA and to calculate
number of sockets per line:
According IEC:
Number of sockets per line=2000/200=10 sockets
According EC:
Number of sockets per line = 2000/250 = 8 sockets
So, we take (8:10 sockets in one line)
For double sockets (4:5 sockets in one line)
For UPS sockets must take one socket per line.
