ETYMOLOGY OF THE ART

 Art comes from the ancient latin word “ARS” meaning


specialized form of skill, or craft.
 It was first used in 13th century manuscripts.
 It was believed that the word art existed since the
founding of Rome.

DEFINITION

 According to Pablo Picasso, Art is the elimination of


the unnecessary. Art is a life that helps us to realize
the truth.
 Agnes Martin defined Art as the most concrete
representation of our subtle feeling.
 Art is something that is created with imagination and
skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important
ideas or feelings.-Merriam Webster
 Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.-

PHILOSOPHY OF ART

Art is a diverse human activities in creating


visual, auditory or performing artifacts,
expressing the author’s imaginative, conceptual
ideas, or technical skill, intend to be
appreciated for their beauty or emotional
power.

 The definition of Art has three Categories;

1. Art as Representation
2. Art as Expression of Emotional Content
3. Art as form

 Art as Representation

 It was known as Mimesis


 The idea was developed by Plato which means
copying or Imitations
 Art is the representation or replication of
something that is beautiful and meaningful.

 Art is Universal
 Art exist because it is important to people’s lives.
 It is the oldest and most important means of
expression developed by man in any culture.
 Iliad and Odyssey
 In the Philippines, the works of Jose P. Rizal and
Francisco Balagtas are not being read because they are
old.
 Florante at Laura
 Ibong Adarna
 When we listen to a kundiman or perform folk dances,
We still enjoy the way our Filipino ancestors while away

 Art as Expression of Emotional Content

 During Romantic movement, expression became


important (18th and early 19th centuries)
 The emphasis on expression became a central
theme in various forms of art and literature.
 Movement of artwork expressing definite feeling,
as in the sublime or dramatic
 Audience response was important for the artwork
was intended to evoke an emotional response.
 Same as today, Artist look to connect to the
audience to evoke an emotion.

 Art is not Nature

 Art, not directed by representation of reality, is a


perception of reality.
 It is man-made.
 Art is man’s interpretation of what he perceives
 Art is man’s way of interpreting nature
