Bangladesh Power Development Board

Introduction

Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) is a statutory body created in May


31, 1972 by Presidential Order No. 59 after bifurcation of erstwhile Bangladesh
Water and Power Development Authority. BPDB had started its operation with
generation capacity of only 500 MW. In its 48 years’ service, the installed capacity
of the country increased to 20,383 MW at the end of the FY 2019-2020.
Vision & Mission

Vision To deliver uninterrupted quality power to all.

To secure continuous growth of electricity for


Mission sustainable development and ensure customer
satisfaction.
Objectives
 To be engaged in implementing the development program of the government in the
power sector.

 To adopt modern technology and ensure optimum utilization of the primary and
alternative source of fuel for sustainable development of power generation projects.

 To purchase power as a Single Buyer from power producers.

 To provide reliable power supply to customers enabling socio economic development.

 To promote a work culture, team spirit and inventiveness to overcome challenges.

 To promote ideas, talent and value systems for employees.


About BPDB
As part of reform and restructuring, transmission was vertically separated as a subsidiary of
BPDB and distribution was horizontally separated to create new distribution entities in
capital city (DPDC & DESCO) and rural areas (REB). Further, a number of generation and
urban distribution companies were created as a subsidiary of BPDB. The subsidiaries of
BPDB are:
1) Ashuganj Power Station Company Ltd. (APSCL).
2) Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh Ltd. (EGCB).
3) North West Power Generation Company Ltd. (NWPGCL).
4) Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd. (PGCB).
5) West Zone Power Distribution Company Ltd. (WZPDCL).
6) Northern Electricity Supply company Ltd. (NESCO).

BPDB also formed Joint Venture with other Organization/Company as part of continuous
development of power sector. The JV with BPDB are:
7) BR Power Gen Ltd. (JV of BPDB & RPCL).
8) Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Ltd. (JV of BPDB & NTPC).
9) Bay of Bengal Power Company (Pvt.) Ltd. (JV of BPDB & CHDHK, China).
