OVERVIEW

A social movement may be


defined as an organized effort by
many people to bring about or
impede social, political, economic,
or cultural change.

Social movements happen at


various levels, which are directly
related to the scale of the issue.
The common levels are local,
state, national and global.

Social movements are also


classified into various types by
sociologists as shown in the figure.

IMPORTANCE
•Advocate for Change: Social movements
challenge injustices and push for reforms in laws,
policies, and social norms.

•Raise Awareness: They educate the public


about important issues, bringing attention to
marginalized communities or overlooked causes.

•Empower Communities: Movements give


voice to people who may otherwise be ignored,
empowering them to demand change.

•Foster Solidarity: Social movements build


solidarity among diverse groups, uniting people
around common goals and values.

•Influence Policy: Successful movements often


lead to significant changes in legislation,
government action, and public policy.
